All I can think of is that those solid state 350 watts just...can't keep up with ultimate tube power.

    Cheers,

That heatsink is keeping your internals from a melt down. Mainly.. the output transistors. Mess with it.. and you will have a box full of melted and fried parts. You can't move it.. make it smaller or add fans to compensate for it. Thats not the way SS amps work bro.
Abandon your idea. It ain't gonna work.
Well.. actually it will, for a few minutes. Maybe even an hour tops.

                  People are misreading.

I'm not going to remove the heat sink.

I don't want to run two full stacks at the same time. (just two half stacks at the same time)

One of these heads is PLENTY powerfull. (any tube purist is welcome to set their rig up next to mine and try their luck, but I got rid of a solo rec head for this rig, and it was a 100% improvement.)

The idea is mainly to have a backup head in the same chasis, and to run each head into a seperate cab so I can EQ them differently.

I agree with most others here. Cool idea, but realistically, I don't think it'll work. Having 2 heads in 1 chassis and potentially dealing with alot of problems would be more hassle than just lugging around 2 amp heads.

                        Yuck! No way.

                        =p

You wouldn't believe how many people are skeptical of these amps, and I do get alot of shit for it, but I've played through quite a few heads (tube and ss) and I've owned a handfull of them. I am very happy with my tone with my current rig though, and I suppose that's all that matters. Crate does use some cheap component, but I have no complaints with the sound yet. It's a very good amp for grindcore/deathgrind.

Thom Kieffer put the guts of his VH/SS series ampeg amps into the Crate GT3500H head. The old Ampeg solid state guitar heads (ss-150, vh-140c) are what bands like Suffocation, Assuck, Eyehategod, Dying Fetus, Death, Misery Index, Pig Destroyer, etc etc have built their sound on and have scoured Ebay picking these things up, so some of my favorate bands made it big using amps like these.

anywho, as for the amp mod, I won't be going through with it. it would be possible to do without removing the heat sinks, and any other issue can pretty much be worked out except for two: interference from one amp to the other, and ventalation.

I think I'll probably just haveto buy a dual live-in case for them. easy as that.

I agree 100%. As a matter of fact, I was contacted by Mesa Boogie because they were concerned why so many paople were trading in their Rectifiers for Crate GT3500H's.
                              Just kidding!!!
If you like the sound of your Crate thats very cool. I have always been a fan of Crate. Made in St Louis I believe. I would imagine that your amp is perfectly suited for death metal. At the Crate forums.. they call it the Ubershall killer. D you hear that Bill????
