  • Monte Allum's sd-1 mod's any good?

Hey all, I recently bought a Boss SD-1, mostly for a boost for solo's and such.
I'm not real thrilled with it stock, especially the loss of bass response when pedal is engaged. There are alot of mods, I know I here alot about the Keeley mods but I was curious if anyone had tried or heard an sd-1 modded with the Monte Allum mod kit's you can get on ebay particularly the ts-808 spec mod plus kit? Just curious if it improved the pedal much compared to stock form. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have owned a few Keeleys, for about a few hours until off they went on consignment. His mods are very hi-fi sounding. Obayashi San mods for Analog man are super sterile and dry.

The difference between the 2 overdrives you are talking about is symetrical and asymetrical clipping. The whole tube screamer craze is nuts. More hump, less hump, more gain, less gain, true bypass, boosted bass, hand painted boxes with trippy names, blah, blah, blah. Unless if you enjoy working with electronics, its a lot of hype for a 10 minute thrill that dies fast.

The best sounding tube screamer of the Ibanez series is the cheapest one! I forget the name of the series, but the pedals were battle ship grey and the knobs recessed into the housing and the text was Martian green. You should be able to fiind one used for less than a good bottle of bourbon.

The tube screamer almost never was. My friend was on hand to choose the chip. He is a low gain player. He still has his, in a Maxon flanger housing. It is the sweetest, most buttery OD which I have ever heard. They couldn't source enough of the chips to do a run, so they went with the chip that launched SRV.

Personally, I don't think the modded SD-1's are that great. Any of them.

Thanks for the replies guys. It is very confusing to a novice like myself. For awhile you'll read some reviews were, for instance, the Keeley mod made it sound like the best pedal ever, and then you read a bunch on how the same mod sucks. I bought the sd-1 because of price, I guess you get what you pay for.

Yeah, GC has an add running here, "Buy now and make no payments for a year", Good thing I had to work all weekend, cause with the GAS I've got right now, I could easily dig myself into a very deep hole. LOL.

The ibanez pedal mentioned i believe is the TS7 from the tone lok series. i have the SM7 smashbox which sounds really good with my amp and has a built in 2 stage noise gate. And is an alternative to my metal zone. I never tried the TS7 but the whole series is pretty good.

Do it! I did a Boss EQ mod and the DS-1 from Monte Allum's and very happy with them.

Thanks, JF, you are right, it was from the Tone Lok series.

Yep, I have a modded TS7 (I did the mods) and it sounds really good. It's pretty scary how much alike the tube screamer family and the boss super overdrives are.

I did the ds1 and sd1. Both were OK. A lot depends on what guitar and amp you are using it with.

Once again, thanks for the advice. The mod is $25, I already have the pedal so what the hell, I'll give it a shot.
