  • Head recommendation

    I'm a member of the music society (basically this is just the name, all we're interested in is rock music ) in my university. We're organizing concerts regularly and we need two solid state heads to use as our main live amps.

    In our concerts we have at least 3 bands in a day, 5 to 6 sometimes We DO soundcheck everyband before the gig, so whatever we're going to buy should be ready to be abused during the whole day

    What I'm expecting is something with a nice clean channel to be used with pedals/procs. etc.. From what I've experienced in 3 years, %40-%50 of the guitar players bring their own pedals,processors and use the clean channel, %20-%30 of them have pre-amps/modelers and enter them thru the return, %10 of them have their own amps/set-ups and the rest uses the amps itself So it has to have an effects loop and should have a decent drive channel for the ones that's going to use it. The guitar players that use our amp's drive channel are only metalheads, so I can say that's the kind of drive I need

    Here is what is remaining;

    -It has to be something new, still in production
    -At least 100 watts
    -3 channels would be great
    -It should be cheaper than 1k
    -That's all

    What we have in mind is Fender's Metalhead and Tech 21's Trademark 300 head...

    Keep in mind I have very very limited experience with heads.

    I guess I covered everything Thanks a lot!

    New Randall stuff is reasonable and covers all the bases you mentioned....

                The Fender MetalHead is a piece of junk, sorry. The Tech 21 amp will make most happy and is very reiable. I understand that you must buy a brand new amp. Otherwise, I would have recommend a Flextone II. Their only heads now are the programmable Vetta series. The new Randalls use tubes in the MosFet power section, so they are out. That would make the Trademark 300 a decent choice and your only choice.

                  MArshall DSL150? did they go an make a 150watt head and nobody cleared it with me?.. lol Or did you mean the DSL50?
                  For flexabiity go with the Spider III head. Much better sounding than the spider II and has 48 presets in it already accesable with out a foot switch. But there is one available for it. They sound killer. Or the Vox Vlavtronics head is cool too. Those have a 12ax7 in the output section used as a power tube then they couple it to the power booster. ( basically a PA quality SS power amp) The trick with these to make them sound more "real tube". Is to crank the master volume on the control panel and turn the volume on th eback of the amp down to desired volume. It will give you a richer fuller more tube lik etone cus it heats the 12ax7 up a bit more and gives that tube warmth.

                        Tech 21 does great stuff... very versatile, sounds good and is built well. If I went looking for a high-powered SS head the TM300 would be my choice.
