  • Mosvalve MV-962 isnt loud enough...problems maybe?

used my Rockmaster/Mosvalve setup at band practice tonight. i nearly had to crank the Mosvalve to be heard! i never run the 5150 past 2.5 and that was louder than the Rockmaster/Mosvalve! LOL
tried the Rockmaster through the 5150 FX loop (using the 5150 as a poweramp essentially) and the preamp sounded massive! so i know its not a preamp issue. the mosvalve might just not be loud enough, but im wondering if there may be a problem ill have to look for. ive always heard they are pretty loud, and i figured it MIGHT be at least almost half as loud as my 5150, but its not.

so any suggestions or opinions? i know i want to get a tube poweramp sometime, but i was hoping the Mosvalve would be loud enough to where i wouldnt need to get a tube poweramp unless i just really wanted one LOL

    thanks guys

What ohmage did you have it set to? Solid state amps put out less watts when the ohms go up - if you can, set your cab to 4 ohms and the mosvalve to match. Also set it to bridge too. I use a mosvalve as my 'emergency' rig if my JSX goes down, and it's plenty loud.

16 ohm 4x12 cab. my 2x12 is 8 ohm i believe, and its not really any louder i knew about the more ohms less wattage thing, i was just hoping it wouldnt have made that much difference LOL

i guess its time to invest in a good tube power amp, and maybe sell the Mosvalve to fund part of it. i just hate thinking of doing that, because i hate giving up gear (to this day i havent really given up any gear LOL). i always like to keep everything because you never know...i might need it one day!

Did you bridge the amp? That doubles the wattage... it's 80 watts a side at 4 ohms, which means into a 16 ohm load you're probably pushing less than 40. Bridged you might get 80 or so. Make sure it's bridged... you never did state whether it was or not.

well, if bridging it is using one output, then it was bridged LOL

if not...then i was doing it wrong! wouldnt be the first time!

That thing should kick at 8 ohms. As Pete said 80 watts per side @ 4 ohms.
Let me ask you this,... is the volume fading in and out or does it stay constant?

the volume is constant...dont have any problems with it fading out. well i did, but i had a bad cable between the preamp and power amp, fixed that and all was well!

only issue ive had with it was when i originally tried it out Channel A wouldnt work (cut out and wasnt very loud at all). a good cleaning solved that though (dirty jacks).

I have no idea.. unless it never was loud enough for you. That should be plenty loud.
Are you running to your cab out of 'A'?

yea...A channel to the cab. im thinking maybe i should give B a shot and see what happens...might do that later though, since im about to go to bed LOL

ill be sure to post back tomorrow and give the results of using channel B instead of A.
and if it turns out it really wasnt loud enough for me in the first place, ill be looking at getting a Mesa 50/50 or something similar...the 50/50s are looking pretty good at the moment LOL

should be a switch on the back somewhere most likely to bridge it, might also be called 'mono'. Look for it, if you don't have it on then you're only running at 1/2 power.

962's don't have a switch afaik. I own 2. Maybe other models do. Most poweramps do have the switch.
Unless you run the inputs and outputs in stereo, once you plug into 'A' input, (mono in) the input should be automatically bridged. (it says bridged input on the amp) So.. I'm assuming the output of 'A' output (mono out) is also the bridged output.

yea no switch...it said it was bridged when only the one output is used. sucks, cuz i really like the tone of it...just not enough power LOL

im looking into maybe saving up a bit and getting a mesa 2:50. if THAT doesnt have enough power, nothing will LOL but itll be a little while. gotta get the money together and then do some shopping around for a good used one

Are you running just one 8 ohm cab? how are you running this again? output to one cab? If you have not, I try it with the 8 ohm.

i have an 8 ohm 2x12 at home, and a 16 ohm 4x12 i normally use with the band. the 8 ohm should be louder, but i cranked it at home and compared to what i remember at practice the difference isnt that big, but i might try out the 2x12 to see if it gets any louder in a band context...however i think taking away 2 speakers might negate any loudness i may gain!
