  • Quick! Help my power amp!

Hey...I was playing on the clean channel at low volumes...and then all the sudden a terrible crackling/popping noise comes blasting through the speakers. I immediately shut off the amp. I turned all the levels down, fired up the amp again (it's a stereo power amp) and then slowly adjusted the levels. The left side doesn't produce any sound anymore; the right side is fine. I looked at the tubes, and they all glow when the amp runs...does a tube stop glowing if it dies? I don't know how to diagnose this. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!
    Nick

Try switching the tubes around from the one side to the other.

      Damn it...that didn't help. What's next?

If you have switched the tubes then it could be as simple as a resistor (help me here) or it could be as bad as a bad output transformer. Where's Twister?
I am a true ass set to this board.

I'm just pissed, because I bought it used, the guy had service cards from techs showing that during the checkup everything was fine...I know sometimes these things just blow...but damn it. I checked both fuses, both fuses look fine.

          Cheers,
          Nick

Tubes and fuses are all you're going to be able to do there - take it to a tech.

Oh, also verify your cords, could be that too, but unlikely.

How much money do new transformers cost?

                Cheers,

Fuses and Tubes may look ok, but sometimes thats not the case (moreso for tubes). Not all things that could go wrong make a tube appear to be not working. It could still be broken or not working correctly even if it lights up. (paraphrased from some guitar amp site I viewed a month back). On another note, have you tried it with different speakers?

That's an idea...I'll swap cables around and see if different speakers have an effect. I was having speaker trouble a little while ago.

                    Cheers,
                    Nick
