  • What would you pay?

A guy I know is selling a used Mesa 4x12 cabinet in excellent shape. He said he paid $800 new. I haven't personally seen it yet. What would you offer assuming it's in great shape and had Cel - V30's vs. Black Shadows?

    Thanks for the input.

No offence but are you guys smoking crack? Everyone knows the Mesa cabs are some of the best built out there, they very rarely ever go for under $500 unless they are in super crappy shape and had the V30's taken out. Even with black shadows it will still sell for about $500 to $550.

Going rate is usually around $575 to $650 depending on shape and whether you have to pay for shipping or not.

On a side note, look for an older one, as the older ones are rated at 280 watts and the newer ones are 240 watts. The older ones have a slightly different tone that made the cabs famous, where the newer ones sound more like every V30 out there.

Mike, maybe you should have asked what is the going rate, and not what would you pay. Like i said in PM the traditionals seem to be going for more latley, if you can find a traditional straight front it is worth the most out of all the mesa cabs.

Hey Sig, I don't smoke crack. I also have NEVER paid over $400.00 for a used Mesa or Marshall 4 x 12 cabinet. Around here, the going rate for a good privately owned 4 x 12 cabinet is $400.00.

You're right. One thing I didn't mention is that a new Mesa 4x12 including tax at the local GC is $945. $400 does seem pretty low for a like new condition Mesa 4x12. Now you got me thinking an oversized might sound muddy and boomy as compaired to a trad cab.

it all depends the style of music you play, if you are into that wall of sound new metal then the oversized is fine. But trust me with the oversized you can tighten it up a little.

For me the traditional is the only way. check your PM i just sent you a long one on differences in cabs.

I know very few players who have ever bought a brand new 4 x 12 from the store. The Mesa oversized 4 x 12's are really nice but they are huge. You can't fit them into the backseat of any car and that is important to me because most of the time I bring my own gear to a gig in my car.
                    I prefer 2 x 12 cabs myself.

Well now, someone is buying them new, because there are all these used cabs going around, so someone is buying them LOL.

but serious, getting for that cheap is cool, wish around here we could.

Yeah, I actually have a horizontal and a vertical 2x12 Mesa cab. I like them but sometimes I don't think they have that full sound that you get from a 4x12. But, 4x12 cabs are a pain in the ass. It's not that big a deal. I just thought I might pick this thing up for a decent price because it's like new. And yes, I'm one those guys that buys brand new gear. But, I usually buy to keep. I can't remember the last time I sold or traded gear. I usually put a lot of thought and ask a lot of questions before I buy so I don't get stuck with expensive gear that I don't want. But thats just me.

                        I appreciate the discussion.

If I kept everything that I bought in the last 30 years I would need a 10,000 square foot warehouse to house all the gear.

I second that motion, I would spend more money in storage then the actally gear is worth.
