  • Roland Micro Cube ROCKS!!!

It might possibly be the best bedroom/dorm room practice amp ever.
Its really cute too. Oh yea.. it runs on batteries if you don't have AC.
I think that every guitar playing college kid should have one.

How good is the distortion on this amp?

The distortion is excellent. You can nail Lynch tones with this thing. I was just jammin to In my Dreams and Unchain the Night and the tone and gain was right there. Nice effect too and even an acoustic simulator.

I agree. It also takes od pedals well. Don't forget the analog rotary speaker effect (stick in some batteries, put a strap on the mc and wear it like a guitar, then spin!

The micro cube has always impressed me. I definitely wish I had started out with one instead of a 10 watt park amp. Piece of garbage that is.

I was thinking of buying one of these to have to take to my friends house or for when the power goes out. And the red one is my color 8)

I think I've found the solution to my problem as far as travel and what amp to bring. I'm definitely buying the Micro Cube! Hell yeah!

I got my red Micro Cube last week. That little box sounds good, the modeling is decent when you consider the tiny 5 inch speaker, but sounds really good with headphones plugged into the rec out jack. Even the built-in effects are decent, though they can be a bit sensitive to adjust. I give it a 9.5/10 for what it is; a small, portable, battery-powered practice amp that sounds very good for it's size. It would score a perfect 10 if it had:

                  - a bit larger speaker, say a 6.5 inch for better low end tone
                  - built-in transformer, lose the wall wart power supply!
                  - maybe a bit more oomph from the amp... but not so much that it starts to eat batteries for lunch

I'm only on my first set of batteries, but from what I have read so far, it only sips the juice and the claimed 20 hours battery life is pretty close to reality. I haven't yet tried the modeling with rec out into another amp or mixer/PA, will try that out later this week.

                  So far, it's

I was surprised how gritty and dirty this thing can sound, especially the rectified model with the gain up over 50%. Also, don't overlook the mic model for use with your guitar. You can get some pretty decent distortion with the gain turned up. Kind of a mix of the Marshall and Vox models.

so how is the headphone out? can you get pretty loud with it? i live in an apartment and never get home to jam until super-late. something like this sounds like a good option.

I dunno how loud it can get, but I'm using a pair of old Sony MDR-V4 monotor 'phones plugged into the cube, and for normal practice I never get it past about 9 o'clock on the vol knob (about 20-25% of max). That's using the recto model, which is obviously the loudest of the models. I suppose using the JC clean or black panel models will require a bit more from the vol knob, but I honestly don't use those models and there is probably enough headroom left in the vol knob to get it loud enough. Of course I'm not trying to blow my eardrums out and I'm practicing in my quiet apartment at night, so ymmv...

                        Anyway, great little practice amp.

These cubes are great !!! I always take one camping. Very versitile with the sound and surprisingly quiet. I have two actually. I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone, especially starters.
