You'll likely find some answers by using the search function. Ada's have been discussed in great depth here before.

I run an ADA MP-1 2.01 version (no mods) through a VHT 2/90/2 power amp. For effects (and slight coloring) I use a Rocktron Xpression, all through a Peavey 5150 cab (4x12), but will be grabbing a Mesa Rec 4x12 shortly. I love the tone out of my setup; I can get great thrash tones (Testament, Megadeth), rock (GnR, 80's metal) and cleans out of the MP-1. The Rocktron Xpression has a Bypass on it, so I can hit that and just get the ADA tone if I so choose. PM if you have any questions regarding the MP1.

Oh, and you can run it through the loop on a head.

If you wanna hear an MP 1 through a head check out Testament, Alex Skolnick used to run an MP 1 through a JCM800.

I have one with the 3.666 mod, which I compared to a friend's stock MP-1 and MP-2. The mod gives it ridiculous amounts of gain, and can more or less nail both Marshall and Mesa tones. Since getting it, I've only fired it up a couple of times, but many of the presets sound great without any adjustment at all. I was able to get Slayer and AJFA-era Metallica right out of the box, I run it in a rack rig that also contains an ART DST-4 solid state preamp and a Peavey Rock Master tube preamp, into a Carvin T100 stereo tube power amp. The Peavey gets a little scratchy with lots of gain and hot pickups, but the MP-1 sounds a bit smoother. My only complaints about the ADA are the controls (I prefer knobs for quick EQing) and a bit of tone-sucking in the effects loop.

Right. Running it through a head or power amp is not the deciding factor in the tone. You can use either a head or power amp. I would recommend that you use a tube head/power amp and not a solidstate. Then the real question comes down to the kind of tubes in the head or poweramp. Each kind of tube sounds different. My VHT has KT88s in it. Your Marshall head may have EL34s which will sound different. The VHT 2/50/2 power amp uses the ELs and it sounds different than the 2/90/2 that I have.

Just an FYI, the 3.666 mod was desigend to get more Mesa tones out of the MP1. So if that's the sound you're going for (Rectifier tones) then I'd do the mod. But the stock MP1 sounds great without any mods IMO.

It was a JCM900 head, the same as mine and it sounds great through the head. I also have a Pevey classic 50/50 power amp and it sounds good through that too.

I have the original version but I added the 2.01 chip. Aside from that minor change and new tubes, it is stock. IMO, the key to getting the most out this preamp is to use it in conjunction with a BBE unit (the 422A being my favorite). Aside from these two components, my rig also has a Rocktron Intellifex, Rocktron Replifex, Hush IICX, and a Mesa 2:90 power amp running through a 4 x 12 with 75w Celestions. This rig just does it for me, and the ADA is the heart of it all.
I have had many different preamps over the years (Triaxis, JMP1, Bogner Fish, Bogner/Hafler Triple Giant, Groove Tubes, Soldano XP77, CAE, and others) in and out of my rig, but I always seem to go back to the ADA. There is plenty of gain on tap...anyone that needs more is most likely hiding poor technique.
Tones are definitely from the hot-rodded Marshall camp, but the addition of an EQ (parametric and/or graphic) can take you other places if desired. I personally think that they are not only the best bang for the buck pre, but the best overall for 80's style hard rock and metal.
