Distortion pedals

What distortion, rack or pedal, do you put in front of your amp, and why?
I'm looking to get a good overdrive kick for my peavey classic combo, it's 50 watts tube, but of course, needs some push!

My MXR Distortion + is my go to pedal. It has a rich, warm tone my line 6 amp just doesnt have. Midway up is a nice Brown sound/ AC/DC tone, and with ti all the way up you get blazing Randy Rhoads overdrive.

Ibanez Tube Screamer 808, Maxon Overdrive 820, Boss DS1, DOD250. All four give different charecter to your sound, in the same order: mild overdrive, another dimension during the cleanup, or a bit of 'hair', or sharper attack. Also different amps seem to take pedals differently, this does not add to an 'easy answer'.

I use a Digitech Tone Driver...I use it more for a boost.

I've been really happy with the Pearl DS-06 that I picked up about a month ago, its completely replaced my Boss Super Distortion. They're discontinued now, but I got mine in mint cond. for $75 shipped on the bay. They're rare though, usually 1 a month on the bay.

The pedal has 6 "spectrum" modes and a "spectrum" level, as well as distortion level and out level. I havent come close to exploring all the tones on this thing. If the opportunity to get one comes up then take a chance and get it. Worst case is you dont like it and flip it, but thats no big deal for this pedal; so far every one I've seen on the bay has sold.

Old HM-2 for the old Entombed/Grave/Dismember sound & a t.c. electronics booster/line driver for the old Anthrax/S.O.D. stuff both in front of a 2204.

Nothing in front of my 5150s.

I like a ProCo Rat, its a very smooth, warm sounding pedal for analog and it works well as a boost pedal when you dial the gain down.

I've used a couple boost pedals too, the MXR Mirco Amp works well for boost but it tends to compress the signal. Same with a DOD 308, pretty much the same idea which is why Yngwie tends to use p/u that isn't really hot as far as output.

I also like the tubed vox 810, they have a very vox chime about them and give a nice mid cut.
Lately I've also really liked Guyatone Filpvalve series, just because they make a well built and great sounding tubed pedal IMO.

Ibanez Tubescreamer and this Seymour Duncan volume booster thing are two good pedals to put in front of a high gain tube amp, thats what I use.

It's an old piece of shit pedal that I can't let go of...because of the insane amounts of distortion it produces. It doesn't sound very good with a guitar, but it's great for distorting vocals!
