  • Who's using a Ecstasy 101B live?

Anyone out there using a 101B for gigs? I've been looking for one for a while and have a chance to get one but it will cost me my new Splawn Quick Rod and Mesa Dual Rec. I'd hate to make a mistake and just wondering what you guys thought of the XTC.

    Thanks!

Have you ever played one? They are great amps. Although I don't gig with mine I do open em up in my studio. I also have the older QR with shared EQ and it has more gain on tap than my 101B. I love the 101B, the blue channel is heaven to me.

I'd say buy the 101B but dont get rid of you recto or qr until you are 100% sure your a 101B kinda guy...I think you are but you'll need to decide for yourself. Some people say they are too dark, say its like throwing a blanket over the cab ..lol...I don't hear it that way.

I guess I'm not best suited to reply here because if I really like an amp...it aint going anywhere so I never have to make a choice of what to keep...I keep em if I like em

I had an XTC. Sold it and bought a Uber. The blue channel is cool, Shawn is right. Great Marshalley tone. But they are dark. Good for liquid lead tones but not very crushing or in your face. Not a wall of guitars type tone. Depends on whats in your amp stable or if this will be your only amp. If its your only amp, its a pretty good choice as its very versatile and can get heavier with EQ, a BBE or OD pedal. The boost feature is great too. But for me it was not MY TONE. I have other amps to play also so I wanted the Uber for those tones. Its a quality amp but if you love your Quickrod you should try the XTC first to see if its for you.

Thanks guys...I'd love to try one but no one has one in stock. I have the Splawn, Mesa and the head I use live is a Carvin V3 which I really love.

I use to have an Uber but (edited for Chrisolson ) the clean channel didn't have the clean type of sound I wanted. Now I need versatility in a head and the 3 heads I have give me what I need but I've got gas for an XTC real bad.

Amps like Bogner, as long as you are buying used ones,You can always flip and get your money back quick.

I have an Uber and probably going to get an Ecstasy also. I'm also looking for a slightly tamer sound. I agree that it does not match up to an Uber as far as distortion but if a Bogner doesn't give you that big tone, I don't know what amp will. I looked for that "wall" before I bought the Uber. I couldn't find a clearer crunch sound than Bogner.

I would feel confident in saying that an Uber or an Ecstasy hooked up to a good 4x12 or two is going to give you a wall of sound. The Uber just has more crunch.

I have used a 100B live for the last five years or so and it is a great amp. All three channels have distinct characteristics. I would not call the amp dark, by any means. It is certainly not as bright or cutting as an SLO100, for example, but does fine in live situations. It does have a great low end wallop and to my ears sounds like a great Marshall EL34 based amp with accented highs and lows with more gain.

100s were the earliest incarnation of the Ecstasy series and not quite as midrange heavy as the 101s so I don't know how this impacts you tonal perference. Also, the clean channels are a bit different on the amps compared to the 101s. For the most part, they are comparable.

To my own ears and in my personal opinion based on my tone preferences an Ecstasy is in a different class and league than a Rectifier. Recs are very popluar and widely embraced but they are not for me.

I have only played a Splawn in a store situation but they seem to have decent reputations with their owners.

I agree that Bogners hold their value extremely well and you would not be risking a lot buying a used Ecstasy to try out before selling your other gear.

I have a feeling you'd end up keeping it. :-)

I have had a modded marshall by splawn, great amp, but liked the XTC alot better.

Now I have to admit, I would like to try a true splawn amp, one they made like the QR or Pro.

when it comes down to it, if you want a great sounding amp with not as many options and you are on a slight budget, go for the splawn, if you want a amp that sounds great with many options, then go for the XTC.

If 100% Brutality is not your thing the Uber may not be for you..but it can certainly be tamed to a chunky JMP sound..but I run mine full tilt with the gain maxed!!

                            That's my tone right there!!

Is your friend getting an endorsement, first I have heard of it (sarcasim) LOL.

But serious i doubt he wants the brutalness of a uber if he is looking into the XTC. Besides I heard you have to be a gay ex cop in order to play one of those :ROTF:
