  • Laney AOR: Anyone Have Some Cool Soundclips?

Back in 1987, I bought a Laney AOR 100 watt tube head, and fell in love. Aside from the JCM 800 combo I had, this was my favorite amp. Unfortunately, when I dropped out of the music scene in 1990, I sold off all my gear, the Laney included.
It's now 17 years later, and I'm seriously considering picking up a used 50 or 100 watt Laney head, again, but I also know that how you REMEMBER something, and how that something WAS can be two different things, combined with the fact that tastes change.
So I want to know if any of you guys have AOR heads, and some audio clips of them, that you can post, just to confirm that it was all, and still IS, that it was cracked up to be.

    Thanks.

I have an AOR 50 head and AOR 50 combo. I like them a lot. I also have a DSL100 that I like a lot too. I'm a Marshall kinda guy, and I find Laney's (AOR's at least) and Marshall's are similar in tone.

No sound clips, everyone would find out how bad I suck LOL!

Yeah, best as I recall, I got a really nice Marshall-like tone out of it. I know alot of people tend to describe them as having a hotrodded JCM 800 tone, which is EXACTLY what I want. Plus it would go quite well with my AOR cabinet. Damn, I wish I hadn't sold that, years ago!

I had one but, sold it 'cause I needed the cash plus I knew I could always get one again. The great tones you remember hearing were there for real. Truly an amp on par with the great sounding JCM800's without the JCM price tag!

Precisely. Raising a family doesn't give me too much available funds these days, so I always try to get the most for my money, especially equipment-wise.

If ya want a sound clip play the first 2 Ratt albums. Both Robin and Warren used AOR's back then. I and one for a while too and loved it. Even tho it had a bad output tranny and it cost me 300+ to fix it and get it back to normal factory specs. I still want another one some day. Hopefully they'll still be cheap enough.

I have the 100 watt version. It's cool, kinda marshall 800ish only with a little more usable gain I'd say.
Transitioning from Retired Musician from cover bands to a Full time vocalist/frontman/guitarist in an original and covers band....it's been a while and this should get NASTY!

Yeah, I know that (big Ratt fan), but I was looking for a basic clip, guitar-only, with no studio tweakings. Just the raw sound.

Yeah, that's what I had. Will probably pick another one up.

                    Just snagged an AOR 50...
Just started to tweak it and it definitely has some great tones!
I'd say it has some great sound pressure with alot of sweet spots!

I am not convinced that Warren or Robbin used AOR's in the studio. I read several articles mentioning a certain Marshall head that would trade back between Demartini and Lynch and a few others back in those recording days.
The Laney AOR's are fine Marshall sounding amps but I will tell you with 100% certainty that my 50w JCM900 running EL34 Mullards will shit all over any Laney AOR and I have had both models.

LOL. I just read the thread post, and though "Huh, someone is looking for soundclips from an AOR", not realizing it was ME, from over a YEAR ago! Wow, talk about dredging up threads!
Well, a years has passed, and I own a Laney, once again, and am quite happy, especially since I bought a Power Soak to run with it. Different beast (for the better) once you are able to cook the EL34s.
JG, are those NOS Mullards you have in your 900? Cause if they are the new Mullards, your 900 is liable to shit all over ITSELF, before you come close to catching up to ME and my AOR.

I like the AOR alot. Its a great amp. Especially for old school 80's metal.

The TRUE Mullards. Nice. Are they everything people say they are? Worth the exorbitant prices people are selling them for?
