  • 2nd trip to GC to play the Peavey's

Well they only had a combo of the JSX as they sold all there 1/2 stacks. So I decided to spend some quality time with the 6505 plus.
After about 1/2 hour, I think this amp is not for me. The clean channel in my opnion is terrible. Well for what I want it to do it is. I can hear something in there it would be usuable for someone. One thing I noticed since this time I turned it up a bit louder is the drive channel is not clear. It has good tone but seems to be very muddy. I like the tone I hear but if I owned it, I would have to take it to someone to clear it up. I like to hear my finger squeeks and string ring. I also like to hear air. This thing doesn't do any of that well. Maybe better speakers or a better cab. I don't know what it was but it's not as good as the JSX. If I was going to get a Peavey amp, the JSX would be the only one in a 1/2 stack. The 6505 is just not my cup of tea. I have heard many bands using them with awesome tone. But I assume plugging straight in with a Les Paul Studio, Schector Screamer and a Fender American Strat with a Humbucker in the bridge wasn't enough to allow me to hear the clearest of clear.
O well. I'll have to wait for the JSX 1/2 stacks to come in and try again. The trip wasn't a total loss for me as I didn't notice the Studio Gibson Les Paul. They are on sale for 999.99 now and I played a killer white one with black trim and gold hardware. Sweet guitar. The Schector with EMG's just sucks. I don't like it no not today nowhere no. The Strat well it's a strat and great as they all are. Love em.

Maybe there was something wrong with the one you tried because most of the reviews on the 6505 contradict what you described.

the clean channel really isn't anything special.

however, it's hard to beat a 5150 drive channel with an sd1 or ts9 in front for a balls to the wall metal tone. i do agree, it can be somewhat muddy if you're not careful with the low end settings (without the boost i mean), but a clean boost really helps with getting the best performance out of it. i've used my 5150 for a whole lot of gigs and it has never ever let me down. easy to tweak, takes 30 seconds to get a good live sound, plus sound engineers love it, as it has a high midrange accent which makes it cut through in a live situation similar to a marshall.

now, my cobra is tighter, clearer, better clean channel and so on..... however, i kinda miss that high mid spike.

ok, end of rant. 5150 boosted=awesome metal amp

            Peavey

I've owned a 5150, a 6505 with bias/clarity mod and a 6505 plus. I liked the 6505 plus the best. It sounds great on the rhythm channel (its not really supposed to be a clean channel) with a good boost pedal. I played mine through my Bogner Uberkab. I've since sold it though to make way for other gear. I now own an ENGL Fireball (among other amps) and I would recommend that over any Peavey product.

I think Ted Nugent plays one now. What a moron he is, he must not know what good tone is.

I'm going to bring the Peavey amp line in here and considering I have to buy a bunch of it, I'm willing to hook you guys up on the prices of any Peavey amps.
