See this is a little biased, because it is going to depend on what type of metal you play. So maybe you should put the name of the amp and the style of metal you play.
Me I play heavy as hell metal, plus some old school. So my older (under 500) Dual Rec's get me there in both places. I just do not have a clean channel with them
Thanks for pointing that out.. since 'metal' has diversified alot in the past 20+ years.
Trace modded Peavey XXX, more metalish and able to cover diverse ground of the genre than my Mk3 or Marshall IMO.. altho.. those amps are great too for certain things. I grew up on Priest, Maiden, etc..mainstream metal. My fav tone is akin to Gary Moore of Victims of Future, Tooth n Nail, Back for Attack era Lynch, 80's Scorps... for that, the Marshall is great. The XXX is able to go into newer tones.
I really dig the recto sound on my J-station for recording.. I think it cops the recto tone very well for a cheapo modeler.
Mark Cameron modded Marshall '78 and 1980 JMP superlead 100's,
run in stereo through various Marshall cabs with green or black backs ,but always paired with a Mesa Boogie slant with vintage 30's, foreget it, I had the best sound in the world. No pedals, no cables everywhere, nothin'!!!!!!
cameron rules. Now I have a toaster.-lol
My style is classic metal (NWOBHM, Ozzy, Dokken, Ratt, VH, etc) and the
ADA MP-1 through a Mesa 2:90 is my vote. Nothing has worked better for me, including various Marshalls, Fender Tonemaster (awesome "brown sound" but that's about it), Bogner Shiva and Ecstacy, Soldano HR50+, Mesa Stiletto (great amp), Dual Rec (not so great), 5150, and others.
I dont have much variety to choose from but the latest is my "best".
I played thru a SS Crate 2x12 combo amp for about 12 years from 84
to 96', and only had a Fender Bassman 4 x 10 amp when i was a kid,
before that! So for the last 5 months, its been
my
Marshall DSL 2000 50 wt head, into a Kustom 4 x12 Cab from the early
80's, with Celestion 65 wt loaded inside. Sounds great with the Boss GT-8
And i havent even discovered some of the better hidden sounds yet!
Hopefully i will be adding an ADA MP-1 Modded pre amp in the future?
That should help. :-)) Now to just own up, and purchase that Boney
Croc Mesa!
Metal is anything from early Black Sabbath to the newest death metal tone.
For instance... a JCM800 2204 is certainly a metal amp.
So is an Ubershall.
The only clarification I would like to make is the amp has to be the one producing the tone.... not a pedal. If you are going to include your favorite amp and a pedal.. the pedal needs to be some sort of overdrive or preamp booster, not a distortion pedal which for the most part is where most of the tone would be coming from if it was in front of your amp.
