5150. It did Metal best. Old school, Nu-Metal, Speed, Thrash, Bubblegum... All metal hails inside a 5150.

To do this day, my best tone has been an ART Xtreme and ART Tube EQ into the front end of any old Peavey Classic I can get my hands on.

Best metal amp i owned/own is my Dual Rectifier. Not sure how old it is and when it was made but it's one of the first ones. Serial is way below 500.

Yes i know this wasn't asked but best one i heard/played is the mighty Ü.

              +1
My SL2H thru my 5150 combo into a Marshall cab sounds killer.
I wish I had this rig back in 1981 :ROTF:

My B-52 At100 212combo sounds surprisingly kick ass thru my Marshall cab as well.
Voiced very similar to a Dual Recto, this amp kicks for more "modern" gain stuff.

                    Boogie Mark IV.

Are you talking amps by themselves or with preamps, etc?
                    Cheers!

See this is a little biased, because it is going to depend on what type of metal you play. So maybe you should put the name of the amp and the style of metal you play.

Me I play heavy as hell metal, plus some old school. So my older (under 500) Dual Rec's get me there in both places. I just do not have a clean channel with them

i play classic metal/hard rock, like NWOBHM, and i LOVE my rivera's for that. it gives me that classic marshall sound along with the good fender sound!!!! plus they look cool with the metal grilles and steel logos!!!
                            GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

                            and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Framus Cobra with Cobra 4x12 straight cab.

Before I bought this amp I owned:

Peavey TubeFex thru a Rocktron Velocity 120. Very versatile, but a bit muddy.

Mesa Boogie DC5 head and vertical 2x12 cab:
Great cleans, crunch channel didn't have enough gain/sustain for me. 5 band eq was cool, but this amp needed to be cranked to sound great. Sounded too old school for me.

Mesa Boogie Single Recto and old school 4x12 metal grill Boogie cab:
Cleans sucked. No life. Dirty wasn't bad, but at lower volumes I hated it. Ran an MXR 10 band eq thru the loop, which helped. However, when played next to my Cobra, even non musicians said it sounded like pure ass. I hate Mesa's "interactive" controls.

                              VHT Pittbull 2x12 combo
Great cleans. Super loud. Ungodly loud. Very articulate. You could hear electrons moving through the pickups on this. The only amp I owned that made every single guitar sound different and unique. No mud in this amp. Sounded the best loud. EQ in the loop helped it a bit. Running thru my Boogie 4x12 was pretty nice. I just wanted a bit more sustain and gain out of this. I got it for a good price, sold it to a friend, who sold it to another friend. It went to a good home so I'm happy.

I almost bought an Uber or XXX. I don't like the Uber's cleans. The XXX was nice but the Framus was more articulate. It sounds great at all volumes and I can even play with the gain on 5 and still have sustain for days. Sounds great mic'd. Non musicians have told me it sounds wonderful.
