Mesa Boogie Road King? Mark IV would be a good choice too.

      Never liked the Mesas.

      Soldano SLO100.

      1976 Gibson Mk53
      1988 Charvel Model 3
      1993 Jackson Dinky Reverse (DR5)

I might be in the minority but I think a Mesa Dual or Triple Rectifier is VERY versatile.
There are alot of great tones in those boxes.

+1 just takes a little patience

get a rack rig - CAE 3+SE preamp and a Boogie or VHT power amp.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

Versatile tube amps in my opinion are 3 and 4 channel heads (or 2 channel heads with lots of switches and knobs ). Partial list:

              Bogner Ecstasy 101B or 101A
              VHT Ultra-Lead or CLX
              Diezel Herbert or VH4/VH4S
              Marshall JVM
Mesa Mark IV or Road King or Roadster
ENGL Special Edition or Savage 120 or Invader
              Peavey JSX
              Carvin V3
              etc...

I also have a soft spot for tube midi preamp/tube power amp setups!

              Mesa TriAxis/2:90 or 2:50 or 50 50 or 20 20 or 2:100
              JMP1
              VHT GP3/VHT 2 50 2 or 2 90 2
              ENGL 570
              etc...

Depends on what you want to do with it. My pick is the Mesa Roadking or Roadster if you need metal plus other tones. If you're not looking for a big Metal tone but want rock, classic rock, blues, country then I'd go with the Mesa Lonestar Special. I love all the Mesa gear!

+1 and I might add for preamps; a ADA MP-1 "Voodoo Amps modded" or a Sansamp PSA-1, or the VHT Valvulator.

I've been looking for a Valvulator for my Power Amp VHT 2/90/2. A great combo.

What about a Splawn? I've heard good things about them, and the site looks interesting.

Roadster does just about everything. H&K Tri-amp is super cool too.

That's what I ended up doing... Pretty happy, and even coerced Tim into CAEdom... Cool.

Now, do you mean versatile live or versatile in the studio? There's a big difference. My THD Univalve can dial in a ton of different tones, especially with its amazing tube-swapping abilities, but it can't switch on the fly.

Love my Univalve, too! Though, I'm playing it clean at the moment with a KT-88, ECC81, 12AT7, and an AMT Extreme III pedal for my distortion.
