  • EQ Pedals

I'm looking into EQ pedals and some possible other stuff to help shape my tone.

Right now, I'm considering the MXR KFK 10 band EQ (I know, its the stock version with Kerry's name on it and a second output), the MXR 6 band EQ or the BBE Sonic Stomp.

Anyone have any experience with any of these?

Well for one, the BBE sonic stomp is not an EQ. I don't have any experience with the others. I use a BOSS ES-20.

I know its not an EQ, but I hear its a good tool to add definition, tightness, punch and clarity, which is kinda of what I need.

I can speak for the BBE as I have the stomp box version. It's pretty cool. It kinda acts like a EQ as you can add or remove bass and trebble. It's not really a EQ pedal. What it does it kinda clear up your sound. When you dial it in to what your looking for, you seem to beable to hear eveything clearer. I don't know if it's adding to your tone but cleaning it maybe a better way to describe what it does. For 100.00 bucks it's so worth it even if you don't like what it does. You can return it from where yo buy it from. But you'll probably keep it. I like mine alot.

I think a 6 band EQ or more is a must unless you are one of those lucky souls who happens to be happy with nothing more than a presence knob.

One of the cheapest pedals I own is a Dano Fish & Chips EQ, but I haven't found a reason to replace it. Works a-okay.

I've had my Boss GE-7 for 16 years and wouldn't be without it. It's the perfect match for an MT-2 Metal Zone. It's quite hissy sounding, but you'll never notice that while you're actually playing.

+1 to that. I wouldn't consider getting an old school Mesa without the graphic EQ included.

EQ's work great in two ways (well, probably more than this). Say you don't like how your pickup is hitting the front end of the amp. You can tweak it with an EQ to dial it in. This would help you find the right pickup - say you need to add a lot more bass, that means you should look for a bassier pickup than what you currently have.

The other way is coloring the sound after distortion in the FX loop. You can control you tone a lot with this EQ, like the ones found on Mesa Boogies.

They also make great lead boost pedals.
