But when I see EMGs in a Les Paul I just cringe. That's like putting Yosemite Sam mudflaps on a Mercedes. Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL

I have never ever liked EMGs. In all honesty I have only ever tried 81s, but I found the tone too glassy and ceramic sounding, I thought they sounded very very loud but with very little bottom end and testes... Sort of like Jewel singing into a microphone, she may be louder than Henry Rollins unplugged, but he's just got more... testes.
In my opinion, that is.- Andi Kravljaca -

They sound different just like any other pick up from guitar to guitar.
+1...I have swapped passives from all my guitars except one, I've got a Duncan Custom in my KE1...which will probably be getting an EMG 81 installed and and detuned to drop C. I prefer 81's in the bridge personally, and all my guitars sound different. I'll be picking up my Death Kelly next weekend, it's a one hum and has a Duncan. Guess whats going in it?Hear the universe scream

Just a pup with an electrically chargerd magnet to get the output, instead of winding the hell out of them and in turn giving them a ass load of mids.
Fast attack...If thats what you like

For example, I put them (81 and 85) in an all mahogony bodied Gibson Les Paul and they sounded bad, but I took them out of the LP and put them in an SG and they were much better. Go figure, both guitars made of the same wood too!
Also theres a difference between 9v and 18v too. (I have the 18v mod in my Charvel Mod 2 (81) and it sustains for days......I have the regular 9v EMG's in a Dinky and they sound good but I would love to try the 18v mod in it too if I can just figure out a way to get a second battery in that already cramped control cavity.)Guitars:
Charvel: USA Pro Mod Slime Green
1988 Model 2,
Jackson: Dinky HSS 'Blue/Orange Flame'
RR3
Gibson: 1978 Les Paul Spl Dbl Cut
1992 LP Studio 'Lite'
2005 SG Special

When you mean voicing do you mean what other amp it sounds like? I haven't tried many amps I would say the high gain sounds like a Marshall TSL more than a Boogie Recto
The clean channel is designed to sound like 2 old Fenders, the Bassman setting gave a fantastic clean tone

I would never put mesa in as a cheap amp. Also mesa's are very picky when it comes to pickups, it either likes a pickup or it doesnt. But cheap, man what crack are you smoking? I have never played our touched a CAE3+SE so i cant really comment on that.
Originally posted by Cleveland Metal View PostThen your amp is likely to blame. I didn't notice the timbre differences as much with a cheaper amps (5150, MESA, Marshalls, Voodu Valve, Sanasamp). My CAE3+se really shows that different guitars with the same EMG81 in them sound quite differently...
Yep... Very true.
My USA Fusion and my Charvel 475 (very similar guitars I'd say really) are my Main axes and they are quite different sounding with EMGs, with the 475 being much better sounding for my uses. The Fusion is noticeably muddy sounding. And my Gibson SG, Charvel Model 4 and USA BC Rich are all noticeably different too, with the SG and BC Rich being the best sounding of all my guitars. I attribute that to the Mahogany construction of the SG and the awesome forged Kahler/floyd bridge in the Rich
Yep...

And yes, something you shouldn't comment about. At least I've played, touched, and gasp... owned MESA's...I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.
