  • Marshall 1960a only working on one side

Hey guys, I bought a Tubeworks MOSValve MV-962 amp (160w... 80 per side @4ohms) and it got here the other day. I hooked it up to my Marshall 4x12 1960a cab and only one side is working (right side speakers only). I tried a few different ways of hooking it up, and the cab is set to stereo in the back so it should be ok I'd think. I'm running stereo out the back of the amp. Both channels are working, but the cab is one-sided hehe. I opened the back and checked the wiring to the speakers and everything seems to be intact. Has anyone seen anything like this? I'm a bit stumped. Call me amp-stupid :ROTF:

Hmmm, have you swapped the cables to different sides to see if the dead side move over to the other side (thus indicating the amp or cables may be at fault)?

Yep. The right side is the only side working no matter the cable arrangement. My first thought was "faulty power amp or cables" but I ruled that out by changing cables as you said, as well as checking both sides of the amp independently. Mono setup has the same effect.

Do the dead speakers stay off even when you switch the cab to mono?

Regardless, sounds like an maybe issue within the switch or switching jacks if it uses those like my Ampegs do.

I have a mono stereo, impedance switch network in my Ampeg / Celestion bottoms and one of them does ill stuff sometimes. I'm about to ditch their switcher junk and hardwire it mono 16 ohms...

The Marshall stereo/mono switch gizmos are well known for failing. Mine died a while back. A local small shop here actually keeps them in stock for that reason: http://www.darrenriley.com - Darren is very cool and he'll ship it to you no problem.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

try each side of the poweramp into the working side of the cab. then try each side of the poweramp into the other side. that should answer the question of what is F'd up. then try running out one side of the pwramp and switching the cab to mono to see if all 4 speakers will work in that config.

Umm, yeah, we covered that for the most part already.

Yep. Tried it all. Only the right side of the cab works in all situations. Amp (both channels) and cables verified working ok.

Thanks for the info! I was wondering about the switch too. I read somewhere in my research last night that others have had issues too, very similar to mine. Thanks for the linkage bro!

Hey dude I just took your advice and ordered one from Darren. Now I'll wait for it to get here and get it all wired up. Thanks for the tip! After screwing with it some more tonight, I am seriously thinking you are right... it's got to be something with that assembly. Thanks again bro!

I'll post the results here when it comes in!

Dude I ordered the jack/switch assembly from Darren on Friday and it was on my doorstep THIS MORNING! I wired her up this evening and it WORKS!!! You were dead on accurate bro! Many, many thanks for telling me about Darren's shop. He really took care of me and I owe ya one

The assembly he is selling is much better quality too than the original Marshall setup. Thicker speaker wires for one, and instead of the speaker wires being soldered to the PCB, they are clipped on... just like on the speaker side. Very cool. Overall it is well worth the $50 plus shipping it cost me. Darren now has a new word of mouth salesman. I will turn everyone over to him who needs parts now haha

Thanks again man! My cabinet thanks you too haha
