Replaced the Metal Zone

I've always been a fan of the MT-2 Metal Zone and I still think it's great when combined with a GE-7 EQ, but one thing always bugged me about it: it sounded a bit nasally. That's probably just the nature of the beast, but I decided that I wanted something a little more natural sounding.

So on Saturday, I went to Guitar Center and tried out several different distortions. When all was said and done, I bought an Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff. I was really surprised because I never much cared for "retro" looking pedals and this one looks about as "1973" as you can get. I knew that the Big Muff was more of an overdrive so I wasn't interested. That's when the guy behind the counter suggested the Metal Muff, which I had never even heard of. It blew all of the others away except for the Digitech Metal Master, which came sort of close.

I'm really liking it so far. As of right now, I have my sound dialed in (in combo with the GE-7) to about 95% what I want and I'll hopefully finish tweaking it all sometime next week.

Anybody else own or tried this pedal?

You might find this hard to believe but I actually don't own one pedal. I have a really stellar preamp and tube power amp and a Marshall 4X12. That being said, the MT-2 is an awesome pedal when paired with the right amp. I'm thinking of getting one for my Tech-21 combo so I have decent sound at home without breaking out my rig which I leave packed up between practice/gig. I'll have to check out the EH pedal.

I've always been a huge fan of amp distortion. The problem, though, is that I play a Marshall JCM800 2210 across an old KMD 4x12. I've never dimed it, so I honestly have no idea how it would sound. That's probably why I love the early Line6 Flextones so much; I can dial my sound in within seconds at any volume.

I use a zone with my jcm800, I find that careful mid selection on the pedal gets rid of the nasal sound you speak of. Metal Muff sounds cool, I am also checking out the new Metalcore by Boss when I get a chance, looks bad ass!

I tried one of those Saturday, the ML-2 Metalcore. It sounded okay, but the Metal Muff is the one that really grabbed my ears.

I own a MT-2. Always been a Boss fan. But I know what you mean about it sounding a bit nasally. If I could, I'd try and get my favorite pedal, the MT-2 predesessor, the HM-2. A bit rougher around the edges in sound than the MT-2, which I feel is a good thing. I'm heading into Manhattan tomorrow for a meeting so I might geek out on 48th St and try out all the new pedals.

No, but I really wanted to after hearing so many great things about it. The sound samples on the web sound great. Unfortunately, Guitar Center doesn't sell AMT, which is weird because Musicians Friend does on their website, even though they're the same company. If someone local starts carrying AMT, I definitely want to check them out.

I keep hearing that the Keely mod turns an MT-2 into a total beast. I may have to try that out someday.

+1 I've heard sound samples of moded MT-2's that get rid of the buzz. They sounded pretty good on the web site but I'm happy with my MT-2 the way it is.

I am also tireing of the sound of my MT-2, love the gain, but hate the nasly sound. The Keely Mod is supposed to get rid of the nasly sound, but they are $150 New. Jack.
