  • bad tube?

Can any one tell me what syptoms my amp would have if a tube has gone bad/broke? I am using a Classic 50 212 Peavey. I am getting some static and some notes sound really "harsh".

That could certainly be indicative of a preamp or power tube issue. Tapping the tubes while the amps running and turned up, with say a pencils eraser or your finger may display an issue with the bad tube. If a tube makes noise audible through the speaker when tapped upon, it has an issue.

You could also try moving the preamp tubes as far as order of postioning and see if it changes anything.

Replace power amp tubes (EL84s in that I think) in sets and have the amp biased (if it's adjustable) to the new tubes. Preamp tubes can be changed singularly and require no other service than popping a new one in.
