  • Tried my PSA-1 with my Peavey Classic 120

and it sounds pretty good! i had a Mosvalve MV-962 that i got rid of so i could get the Peavey, and the PSA sounded only OK with the Mosvalve...but it rips with the Peavey! i dont know if that goes for all SS poweramps with the Sansamp, but i dont see why the recommend an SS poweramp...the tubes sound fine with the PSA.

only thing i hate is that i have to have a midi board to swich the PSA around...good thing about that is it can control my Rockmaster too. now i need an MP-1 as well and i can probably have nearly any tone i ever wanted available!

gonna try my Pod XT Live through the poweramp next and see how that goes.

I thought my PSA-1 sounded good with SS and tube stuff really. Both ways had their good stuff about them. I used a Marshall EL34 100/100 and a VHT-2150 for tube, and a Cerwin Vega amp for SS....

i think the Mosvalve just wasnt a good match for it...my Rockmaster sounded really good with the Mosvalve, but the PSA only sounded so-so. i wouldnt mind trying a different SS poweramp with it. time and money are always a factor though!

does anyone know any songs or clips or anything that has the PSA-1 associated with it? i know that Rammstein used one on Du Hast (and that whole album, i think) and Queensrhyche used them some on Empire i believe. other than that?

SS amps will sound different. When I was running a Voodu Valve, I used a Rocktron Velocity SS power amp that everyone raved about and wasn't impressed, yet I tried the Cerwin Vega and it was pretty cool. Much more serious power amp tho.

I'd heard Alexi and Roope used PSA-1's on Sinergy's "To Hell and Back". I pretty much nailed that tone with mine so I'd probably agree. Has that open wah sound that you can get with the PSA-1. Pretty cool.

i know Alexi and Roope both have PSA-1s in their racks, and i read somewhere that Roope prefers the PSA over the Lee Jackson preamp. i found a few videos of him playing with a band called Waltari before he joined CoB...it was weird, but pretty cool LOL i saw that his rack had a PSA-1, a poweramp, and something else (maybe a conditioner or tuner) but nothing else, and his tone was great.

ill have to go download a song or two from To Hell and Back and check the tone...i need to buy the Sinergy CDs, but i just never think about it! and i have to order them online, which im just lazy about LOL

got a few of the songs off To Hell and Back...and that tone is AMAZING IMO!!! i love tones like that...after listening i went and mucked around with my PSA and came close with the Van Halen patch. awesome! cranked it up and banged out some CoB and other random riffs. i think i might like the PSA more than my Rockmaster, and i love that thing! LOL

anyone got any settings that they use with the PSA? im curious and wanna try some stuff

Yeah, definitely a cool album. I enjoy listening to them go at it guitarwise for sure. Very exciting stuff for me. I could do without Kim singing really tho.

I remember having nailed that tone (and you definitely can absolutely nail it with that preamp) and it wasn't close to any of the presets it seems.

Been so long since I had it I don't remember what the settings was. I remember Preamp (gets that overdrived edgy sound) and Crunch being set pretty high, I'm thinking Buzz was certainly past 12 oclock, and a lot of getting that wah (Michael Schenkerish) tone was totally in the Punch setting, I'm thinking it was 3oclock or so.

Settings like these make the preamp sound very noisy and somewhat hard to control. It took me a long time to get cool with it at such high gain levels. But, it's worth the trouble I think.

I like the bassman patch with an overdrive in front.

well i can definitely say i love the guitar playing (i knew i would, ive listened to some sinergy before) and Kim's singing doesnt bother me that much. i actually kinda like it LOL
and i used the Van Halen setting i think...preamp on full, buzz around 12, punch and crunch around 1 or 1:30, drive up around 3, bass and high around 1 o'clock. very trebly and has that slight wah-cocked sound. i need to tweak it a little more, but i jammed out for a good bit with that setting! noisy and out of control a little...but when youre playing no one can hear the noise

i know Alexi uses the Lee Jackson preamp mostly with Bodom, but i wonder if he used the PSA on any of the Bodom recordings...i know Follow the Reaper sounds like it could very well have been at least some PSA, and when i saw them live his tone sounded almost exactly like Follow the Reaper.

great preamp...i cant believe i got one for 125 bucks ill never let it go!

on a side note, i also found a picture at Michael Wilton's webpage of his tour rack from 2000...up near the top was a PSA, and near the bottom a Bogner Fish, along with a Peavey Classic 50/50 poweramp.

ill have to try that...i did try the Telecaster patch, where every guitar sounds like a Telecaster...would be interesting to use that for some things, but its funny having a super-strat metal guitar sound like a Tele!

now if i could only chicken-pick!

yup...there was a local store that my buddy worked at and his boss was cool as hell. i got the Mosvalve i had for 125 bucks, and the PSA for 125 bucks. he paid 125 for it, so he got what he paid for it, and i got a smokin' deal! the only thing was the power cord had been damaged and was repaired...not a big deal at all.
the Mosvalve was cheap because Channel A didnt work...all it needed was a good cleaning
and i had gotten an Epi Les Paul from there for 250 bucks, but sold it to my brother because i just dont get along with Pauls...sounded great for an Epi and played fine, just not my thing. too bad they shut the store down...but at least i got a great preamp out of it!
