XXL...Sounded better than Steve’s previous Valvestate...But the V-Apmpire her replaced his XXL when he finally couldn't deny it anymore was even better.

The XXL sounds great until you push it if a full heavy band...I promise you.
The key here is that I can buy either amp locally, and return it if it's not going to work out. The Marshall is basically out of the running anyway at this point, because almost every response on every forum has been negative. The XXL seems to get a lot of praise elsewhere - as solid state amps are concerned - but I suspect that a lot of that depends on the cab too. Mine is a Jackson 4x12 with Eminence speakers, not sure what model.

The Classic 60 isn't going anywhere, but I'm going to start by adding a Boss ME-50 for my "baby" rig: ME-50, Classic 60, Peavey 212MC upright 2x12 slant cab with Sheffields. Trying that at an out of town show next month. If I can simply find a reasonably priced backup for the Classic, I won't even bother with a head, but I'm waiting to have cash in hand so as to avoid putting anything on a credit card. Otherwise, I'd be an eBay bidding machine as we speak!

      marshall. Just a thought
Thanx! That may be an option when/if I ever do get a tube amp. I just started playing again a couple of years ago so I went with what made sense at the time. To be honest, I don't even use the amp's OD1/OD2 channels. I run 2 different pedals through the clean channel for the heavy stuff along with a Boss GE-7 EQ. The clean channel by itself is usable as well as the acoustic channel. Trust me, the urge for a tube amp is starting to set in especially since we just bought a new home and I have a guitar room to play in instead of the living room like our last place. BTW, how do you like the 50 watt DSL?
My future band shall be known as "One Samich Short Of A Picnic"!

I use my AVT150 head live all the time. (It's on the right).
I only had one problem with it over the last year of gigging.
          Buy it.

and do you run it with that JCM 900 on the left?

Do you use it for effects?

Do you play in a blistering metal band with bass drums flying?

Thats the big thing getting advise here...It makes a big diff what kind of music you play...I know Under Eden is in the same vein of music as Severed Serenity. I have played in a situation with all these amps and he is talking about a half stack competing with extreme metal...

not a wall of Marshalls in a rock band.

Yes...And Andy knows he will be mic'd and there will be monitors and a great PA.

I don't think Andy has very great tone anyhow...He has such great feel and a such a great player but...

If Andy and Chuck didn't have such great playing and great songs, I think it would be more apparent. Their tone is/was their weakness...Especially live. I love em both but, thats how I feel.

Maybe you guys are always blessed with a great set up wherever you play...I know that many times I have to rely on my amp alone...

Hey, I might do that. We are playing a show a week from tomorrow where I'll be using my usual pedalboard (Peavey wireless > Rocktek tuner > ART Xtreme > ART Tube EQ > Hush > Boss DD-2) into the Classic 60 and Jackson 4x12. After that, I plan to get an ME-50 as mentioned earlier. The main point in finding a solid state head would be something that is ideally zero maintenance and requires nothing more than a footswitch for channel selection and effects. That's how the XXL became a contender.

I wasn't aware of all the different Peavey power amp models. I knew about the 60 and 60/60, but now see that there are also the 50/50, 120 and 120/120. Too bad that Peavey discontinued the entire line.
