JCM 2000 Haters

I have a question for all of you long time forum members... how many of
you who have multiple "boutique" amps, run them in stereo? Or if you have say 6 great +$2000.00 heads, do you always just play through them
one at a time in mono? I would think that a Splawn, and say a Bogner
would be killer sounding as 1/2 stacks in stereo separated to about 15 ft?

Ill say one thing... the owner of Bizarre Guitar in Phoenix..could play
through ANY amp he wanted. He has "Bogner ectacy", Peavey JSX,
Phattone, Bogner Shiva...etc.. what does he gig with? DSL 2000
50 watts (2) in stereo through modified Marshall cabs,(better silicone
wiring, instead of the cheap wiring that comes in Marshall cabs.
Now sure...he has to "appear" to back his Marshall dealership public
personna, but really who would know if he always gigged with Bogners?
Hes had everything come through his doors..$8K 1982 JCM 800's...
74' Plexis... all of them... So that says something, that a guy who
could play through 4 Ubershalls with 8 Mesa Cabs ....Doesn't!

i don't get it. i've been using a buddies TSL for band practice and i think it sounds great. if you can't get a good sound out of these there must be something wrong with you.

Dude let me tell you a few things.
1) Alot of people just don't know how to set an amp up. If you think that a stp by the music store, slap a few settings in and it's going to blow your skirt off,well most amps don't work that way.
2) You need time to get to know an amp. Spend time playing around with it to unlock it's abilities.
3) Not all amps are for everyone. They make many different amps for a reason. As an Artist, you try to find the right tools to express yourself. If the Marshall or any amp for that matter isn't a fit, then you simply move on to the next one.

Bottom line is this, The name or model number isn't whats going to sound good, it's the right combo of player , guitar, effects , amp , power , cables that makes up the entire package.

I agree with you. We have been using a DSL100 for over a year now and it sounds great. I also had a TSL60 that sounded great too.
I couldn't get a bad sound out of either of them and they haven't given us a stich of trouble.

I really like the DSL 100/50. For the money, it's a hard amp to beat.

I guess I'll stay in my curmudgeon corner then. Like I said, I'm waiting for the verdict on the JVM, but on paper and clips I've heard it sounds great. The most modern marshalls that I've really liked much were a JCM 800 2210 and a Jubilee, both of which are dreaded 'diode clipping' amps. I really liked them both. DSL's and TSLs just don't do much for me, and I've played each at length, not a 5 minute GC blowby. If you look at the guts too, there's been a steady spiral down from a JCM800 to 900 to 2000 series, regarding things that can and will affect reliability and ease of service. The JVM guts look like a Line6 Vetta to me compared to a relatively clean 800.

Comparing Marshall quality to Gibson quality is not right! A korean made epiphone has much better quality than a US made gibson.

Sorry but I see these Korean made Epiphones all the time and they don't hold a candle to a USA Gibson. Quite frankly, most of the Epiphones I see are complete shit and most of the Gibsons I see are quite nice. There isn't a single Epiphone product that you don't have to tack on "for the money" after saying it's good.

I've played some JCM 2000 amps that were fine. You do have to wind them up quite a bit to sound good. Dollar for dollar there are certainly better buys out there.

That's interesting to me, that the guy could be so picky about 'silicone' wires in his cabs and then use DSL's. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I know a lot of guys who take cheap or easily replaceable gear to gigs because of theft or possibility of damage.

Plus I'd like to hear more of these $8k 1982 JCM 800s. That sounds wrong in the worst possible way, since I think you can still get real plexis for less than that.

I spose if I did have to choose something to beat around in clubs and chance getting stolen, I'd rather lose a DSL than a Bogner (not that I'm too hot on Uberschalls anyways), I'd guess the DSL would get it. I can certainly see "that" logic. Although I still (apprehensively) drag my expensive crap to shows cuz I like the sound of it. Not that "most" people notice anyways.


I mean really, I'm not "WANTING" to be a Marshall basher. I wanted one badly as a child and I've owned a lot of great ones (and bad ones). The new ones really do fall short (wish they didn't as I love the look of stacks of Marshalls onstage), are often failure prone (cold solder jopints plagued quite a few I've had), they don't (IMO) quite sound so great for the dough (lots better out there for the $$), and are overpriced as they seem to be riding on a great name that was earned back from the 800 and older era. And, even those (that I like) were known sporadically for great and some definitely bad ones.

I'd happily own a MESA (that I just can't get to sound to me although they're fine amps) or even a Vetta much quicker than a DSL. No question.
