  • Randall RM100 gig review

Well, I had one of these before, and it sounded like crap with my GT8. So I sold it and moved on, even though I thought the switchable tube preamps was a very cool feature.

Here's what I used at the gig last night:

Sennheiser EW100 wireless into a crybaby fasel classic (more on this wah in another thread) into a modded Boss SD-1 to the front end of the RM100. In the loop was a TC G-major. Changed patches with a Rocktron midi controller. Channel 1 was the Randall Ultra module, Channel 2 was Recto, 3 was a clean module. I had the rocktron set up for 5 different sounds - two channel 1, two channel 2, one clean. the last pair of channel 1 and two had louder delays, and the top 5 turned off/on delay, chorus, tap tempo and a solo boost.

It sounded great. Was a little fatter than my VHT, not quite as much clarity, but it also was a LOT easier to play... was tighter than the JSX, but not quite as tight as the VHT but close depending on the module. I had the cab (marshall GT75 loaded slant) thumping pretty good and it didn't woof out at all. I REALLY enjoyed using the ultra module, the recto was ok, and the clean was well, clean. I set the gain at about 1/3rd up on the recto and used the SD to push it, so it gave me 4 effective channels.

So what is the bad thing about this setup? The freakin' Randall is HEAVY. I mean HEAVY. I think they are around 75 pounds or so... feels twice as heavy as my VHT. It sucks... a band I shared a bill with had a marshall head cover/case with casters on it like luggage. I may be investing in one if the RM100 fits in it. One other thing that was interesting is that I had the amp CRANKED... the G-major cut my effective levels since when I set it for the same volume with or without the G, it clipped in the G-major. May just be operator error on my part, but we'll see. Plus I had the amp volume down -6db for the volume 'boost'. It still kicked ass, had the guys in the band say I had my best tone yet, and they've always been happy with the sounds I got.

I'm thinking about getting the rackmount head and running it with the mesa 295 I recently acquired. Anyways, I'm a convert back to the Randall modular concept... : )

Glad to hear ya got another RM100. I've been using and loving my RM50B for several months now. I remember you mentioning how you didn't get along with the loop in your last RM100. I'm running the factory reverb in the parallel loop and pedals in the serial loop and I don't mind it at all. It sounds a little different, but not much. I am using an Ebtech line level conversion box in the serial loop.

BTW, I've never played an RM100, but I've heard more than one person say that the 50 watters have a "better" sound than the RM100. Plus, they weigh a lot less and come with reverb. On the downside, they only have two module slots, but with a couple pedals it seems sufficient.

Cool Pete! I really liked the RM100 but ditched it in favor of a rack setup.

The only bad thing about the RM100 is the loop. It did not play nice with a lot of stuff. My G-System did not get along with it either. The problem with the G-Major and G-System is that they have very little headroom - either the levels work or they don't. My Eventide makes a mockery of the TC stuff and laughs at the output of the RM100. Surprisingly I have a Boss VF-1 that worked great with it as well.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

Yeah, I had the channel volumes on at about 2/3rds up and then the master on the RM100 at 3/4. *!* I was loud but not LOUD... if I ran my 50 watt VHT at that level, people would be sterilized in the first few rows. The GMajor really was finicky regarding levels... Tim, how did the effects sound on the VF-1 vs the Major? Can you tap tempo with the VF-1 and a pedalboard that sends cc commands?

Personally, I like the VF-1 better but it's not the holy grail either. The VF-1 is based on their SRV/SDE/SDX/RSS technology. I still have mine but haven't used it in many months.

BTW, in that general price range I would take a Rocktron Intellifex or Xpression over the G-Major or VF-1. The Rocktrons don't have as many effects but they sound better.

Shit, I used to have an original Intellifex. One step forwards, two steps back... do the intellifexes or Xpressions allow you to set up tap tempo on a midi controller? I have a rocktron controller now, so hey, maybe all rocktron would be the way to go!

Cool side note - the RM100 will power a midi controller if you use a 7 pin cable. Very useful.

I don't recall about the tap tempo thing - Rocktron has the manuals on their site though.

If it came in a Barry road case then you did.
                            Its a great amp. I just didn't need 2 Vetta's.
