new rack - midi questions

So I've decided to get back into a part-time band with some local friends, doing a some 80's metal stuff for fun. As part of doing it, I decided to leave my Soldano HR50 home and retire it to my basement rec room. I am replacing it with a bunch of rack gear, mostly Rocktron stuff i.e. PROGAP, Intellifex, Carvin power, BBE sonic maximizer. I love the flexibility, but know nothing about midi settings, setting up the pedal board, controls, etc. I'll probably pick up a Midi Mate, but have no idea how to program it. Can anybody direct me to a good place to learn the ins/outs of midi control?
