  • 5150/BBE users, help!!!!

So I finally got my 5150 set up with the BBE 422A and EQ. With very minimal fiddling around, I found an amazing rhythm tone, metal riffs galore.

Here's what I'm looking for: what have you guys done with amp, BBE, EQ settings to get different tones? I'm going to be spending quite a bit of time messing around with the knobs to see what I can come up with. But I'm curious what others have used to dial in some cool sounds. I'm open to everything: classicrock/metal, thrash, clean, Jazz, what the fuck ever.

I pretty much just dialed my units in just HEAVY. Metal and thrash are strong, it of course does classic when set to the lets say the lesser "stun" setting, Clean and jazz aren't really among its high points. Clean is do-able tho.

I never really considered it a seriously versatile unit. But, I never asked more from it other than brutal (what more could you ask for haha). And for that, I run them hi gain, high resonance, and from there it was point and click.

A parametric might be nice, but it will merely give a bit of tonal distance from the rest of the 5150 herd, that would be cool tho. Nonetheless, it will still be a 5150, and that's a nice thing really.

I preferred to use them with matching cabs. They gave me the ability to run more gain and resonance without farting out.

      Thanks for the info.

How about something like this: where might I start with the different amp settings to go from EVH to heavy as shit?

Oops, How did I not see this thread.

so many 5150 thread prolly..if I knew Trav posted it I would have responded immediately..

        PM sent bro..

I found with a 5150 w' the BBE422 series, that I didn't requite any EQ units..it seemed to be the case where less meant more..it lost it's orginic tone with any EQ I tried with mine..so I only ran a 422 and a delay unit..at that time it was a Chandler digital echo..tape simulator...but any FX unit of your preference will do..to a VH slap back which I discovered to be around the .366...w/ one repeat..."the "Cathedral" setting..

what speakers are you playing thru?
I can get much more of a "VH" tone out of my 5150 when I go thru greenbacks.
More of an "Arch Enemy" tone when I go thru sheffields.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

OK, slightly on topic. Which of the BBE`s are the good ones? I want to try one thru my Carvin X100B and MTS. Thanks-Jack.

Having owned many, I've always found the old, cheap 422A's to be the most pleasing for guitar.

Later ones were too shrill or fizzy sounding to my ears.

These BBE's sound great with some amps, but sound horrid with others.

T, check out this site. It stores people's fave settings for various amps. I haven't really looked at it, but it's a very cool idea.

Thanks again, guys. And I have to mention that I wouldn't have seen the light if it wasn't for Bill. He told me long ago to grab a BBE 422 or 422A and run it into the 5150. Even when I was thinking about selling it because I couldn't use it in my townhouse, Bill talked me out of it. He said, "Bro, don't let your 5150 be gay. Get it out of the closet. Get a BBE 422 and all will be solved." Well, maybe I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it.

                          EXCUSE ME?????!!!!

nah, that was in my rack when you and Mark came over for the first time..but you did have a older single channel model at that time too.. a 361(?) ..great minds think alike...

You know, actually my then new 5150 and BBE was the key that actually brought us together..well one of the "keys"..besides our coolness and quest for great tone.

                          that quest never really ends..

                            ...yeah that sound about right!

Now you got a rig that could hang with anything..

I tried that 422 with every amp John and I ever owned..(too many to list)..some amps do well with them, some amps instantly reject it, but it is mandatory for the 5150..it gels with that amp more than any other we've tried.

John and I did about everything you could imagine to milk a stock 5150 including foreplay..and dry humping.

The invest revealed..a 5150 , the matching cab, and the BBE 422/422a..

John and I ran those with celestions for years...Marshall and Ampegs cabs (like In Flames did some years ago) with various celestions..and always did well with them.

My last 5150 half stack just fell in my lap w/ matching cab..I basically stole the damn thing. Since I'm very partial always with celestions for eveything I used, I was pessimistic about the Peavey 5150 cab..

I immediately discovered that I could get the gain past 5.5 and turn the resonance up..without the "flub" I always had with my Marshall 1960B cabs..

It doesn't sound like much, but going 5.5 to a smidge passed 6 made a big difference for a much heavier, and still "tight" tone without the use of a stomp for rythm and lead..

I'm werid about "stomps"..I know many awesome players with great tone use "stomps" to achieve their crunch and or lead boost.but I'm a stickler for going all amp..

I'm interested in trying one with my Uber..it has massive amounts of gain but the tone is "dark"..with much girth..it doesn't repond as well as My Marshall rig for pinch harmonic squeals and the crazy divebombs which is a big part of my thing..it does OK..maybe the right stomp would help in that area..

I know the TS9, and the Maxons, and the couple Boss stomps seem most popular..John's bud mods 'em and has a few to try out...we shall see.

See, the quest never ends...no matter what you have.
