Here's an idea for Eddie - make a single channel amp that gets the VH I tone at a reasonable volume. 5150s weren't a hit because of Eddie's involvement, they were just a really good high gain amp that was affordable. I don't know anyone who bought a 5150 to get Eddie's tone...

I got my two cuz the amps crunched and were authoritive sounding.

Yeah, I used to have a 5150 II. A lot of the time I wish I still had it, but the reason I got rid of it in the first place was because I couldn't get enough volume out of that thing. Even after re-tubing, when I would turn it up almost all the lows would fly out the window. Then I would just have a really trebley, hissy, guitar tone with no distinction. The lows just couldn't hang as the volume increased, and who wants to EQ an amp like: Treble 4, Mid 2, Bass 10?

I bet a 5150 would be sick with everything on 5 with an external EQ. Anyone done anything like this, or similar?

Plus they get tons of feedback, which is a plus in my opinion. Also, that's how the Model T is so I like that. It's a very volatile amp with lots of noise and feedback.

All the Mark III talk has got me interested, plus I know Metallica and Today is the Day used them, but it worries me that it's gonna sound too good, and too clean. I need some abrasiveness in a guitar head. I don't want to just sound good, I want people to be holding their ears.

I beg to differ. There are TONS of guys who claim to have bought the 5150/6505 series including the block head series to get that EVH tone. I have read countless reviews on Harmony central. But I dont think anyone has nailed the tone yet. :ROTF:

I'm still convinced Ed would have (and should have) stuck with Soldano but it would not have been as profitable (i.e. no mass marketing and no signature model with Soldano) Looks nice, but I'll be keeping my SLO. Plus, these days, he'll probably have another model out with some other company just as these are taking off.

Differ all you want, the only tone Eddie had that was worth a shit was his old marshall one. I didn't like anything after 1984... it too heavily processed. The 5150 won't get you the classic VH1 tone.

That would be killer. No BS. When you turn up all your eq and gain to 10 you get the tone at any volume level... lol. That would rock.

Amen, brother. Never even bothered to buy 1984, in fact. Once I heard JUMP, I was done. It was all downhill, from there. Even though DIVER DOWN had some really nice tones on it, I thought the tunes were sorta spotty.

Geez, for me, I really loved "for unlawful carnal knowledge". I agree, the tones on the early albums were incredible and legendary,,,but I loved the guitar sounds on "for unlawful" just as much. Different, but still great to me. And once I found out the SLO was all over that album, I knew some day I wanted that amp. Finally got one like 15 years later. You'd think Eddie would have played his cards right and put out a signature Marshall head after all of those legendary early albums. Now that would have been huge! Just think,,,,built in variac, etc. Power tube overdrive in spades. A total, honest replica of that early amp of his revealed for all. No one would probably ever get his tone even with that, but it sure would be the hottest amp Marshall ever sold. Maybe if they could just clone his hands to go along with it, that old tone might be almost attainable.

My buddy at the local shop told me Friday they have one on order. He said expect around $1000 for the cab, $1800 for the head. Something I've thought about with the whole "getting the brown sound" thing, wouldn't the amp to get be the Marshall 1959HW? Isn't that a reissue of the infamous "plexi"? Just wondering.
