  • Swap DSL100 head for JVM410?

I've been playing a JCM2000 DSL100 head since 2003 or so. That amp has really fallen out of favor with me for the following reasons :

    1) Seems kind of cold, lifeless, and unresponsive to me
    2) Pretty kickass for classic rock power chording, but poor for nimble, articulate progressive rock lead playing (which is what I am going for)
    3) Tube lag? Just seems like a roaring, lumbering mess sometimes
    4) Has a hard-wired "wah" kind of sound that kicks in when I go above the high E-string at the 12th fret. Can reduce but not remove with EQ
    5) Sounds like shit at bedroom volume levels (even with a Marshall Power Brake)
    6) Nice bottom end, but poor overall clarity
    7) Mediocre to harsh clean sound (I prefer a Fender Vibrolux)

I play a WR-1 and a 1986 SD King V (neither of which gel with the DSL IMHO). I am interested in the JVM because I just love the sound of the older JCM 800's and I love some of the high-gain clips I've heard. Also, I have an investment in the 1960A cab and Power Brake that I would like to reuse. I am going for a Jake E Lee/Vinnie Moore/Satriani/Paul Gilbert/Ritchie Blackmore kind of vibe (all over the map I know...) Yeah yeah I know I need to demo one, and I will (I was at the GC today but didn't have time...). Comments? Should I look in a totally different direction? The DSL100 has been a really bad experience for me.

Dang I hope so. Here's a Jake E Lee vibe with the JVM that has me all "fired up" about getting a JVM.

The JVM sounds a little thin in that clip of Jake E. Lee. I hope the 2203`s aren`t like that? Jack.

the JVM sounds pretty similar. They're both pretty thin. If you want the killer modded Marshall sound pick up a Splawn Quickrod. Incredibly smooth thick heavy sound.
