  • Flextone III opinions

I remember someone got one of these recently (Pete?), and I'm curious about this amp. I played the 2x12 model at GC for quite a while today and I was pretty impressed. I didn't get to crank it obviously, but it did sound really good. I have an offer to join a cover band that would play the typical bar band rock stuff, and I think my current gear would be way overkill for this situation. Do these amps fall apart when turned up a bit to hang with a drummer? Do they cut well in a band situation?

I really don't want to spend that much cash on this rig. I was also considering some sort of somewhat inexpensive rack rig, say a Voodoo Valve/Carvin T100 poweramp combo.

I have one - if you don't mind it feeling a little weird, they get as good of tones IMHO as a vetta does. Just limited regarding # of effects and can't do two amps at once... the other guitarist in one of my bands has the flex III and it hangs with no problems at gigs. I left mine where one of my bands practices so I don't have to mess with lugging gear up there.

That's exactly it... something that is an all in one solution, easy to transport, and can get a wide variety of tones. Most venues that have cover bands are sports bar type places and a half stack is out of the question. Volume is an issue...

I notice it has a MIDI IN/OUT... could I use my Rocktron Midimate with it or would I have to buy the Line 6 footswitch?

You can use the Mdimate. But all it will do is random access anc scroll through the settings. I dont think it will turn effects on and off.

I like my Flextone III quite a bit. Granted, I really only use it as a practice amp, but I like the sounds I get out of it. I have the 75 watt 1x12 which is great for bedrooms. If I were to play it out, I would definitely make use of an external speaker cab or PA. Its plenty loud to cover what you're looking for, but there's just something about driving multiple speakers that sounds much better to me.

I had the XL (twice!), and it was a good amp. I like the original Flextone better. Probably just me though. I sold it to get a Floor POD Plus, poweramp, 4x12 setup though, which I liked much better. Nowhere near as portable though...

I still have the Floor POD, but that kinda got phased out by my Rocktron Replitone MP preamp. I just sold that too. Great preamp though - you may want to look into a Replitone combo as well - LOUD AS HELL!!! I had one a couple years back. I'm using a Mesa Rect-O-Verb half stack now though. I keep the POD around "just in case"...

I've had my Flextone III for about 4 years or so. At low volume it sounds great but cranked it loses definition fast. I have the 1x12 model and drive a Mesa 1x12 cab loaded with an EV. The Mesa cab helps big time. I use it for practice and smaller shows and run the direct line out. Through the PA it sounds pretty good. It's held up great, no problems. Get the Shortboard controller. You've got a built in tuner, wah/volume control and it carries in the back of the amp. Very compact & easy to transport. Not a killer amp but it does ok.
