very basic amp question

hi guys,

I just got an THD univalve and mesa 2x12 cab on ebay, but I am not sure how to connect them because this is my first time using a head and cab configuration. On the THD head, there are two options: "2 or 4 ohms" and "8 or 16 ohms". On the mesa, there are also two options, "8 ohms in" and "parallel out". I think I should use the "2 or 4 ohms" on the THD and "8 ohms in" on the mesa right? Just want to make sure before I screw up anything. Thanks!

Wrong... if the cab is rated at 8 ohms, use the 8 ohm output on the head.

Always match impedance if you can, so in this case 8 ohms to 8 ohms.

Yes best thing is to match the impedance. Sometimes that's not possible, in this case always use the cab input with a higher impedance than the rating of your amp output. So what you said would also work, you just loose some power.

Never connect it the other way. Means never have a higher impedance on your amp out than on your cab input.

Just so that you know. You CAN use the 2-4 ohm setting with ANY cab if you wish. There is a difference in tone. Call THD if you wish. They were designed to take it. There is a BIG difference in bass response between the 2 settings on my Flexi-50. I leave mine on 2-4 usually (with an 8 ohm cab).

Good point. The THD amps can take it. They also have their own built-in load and can be used without being plugged into a cabinet.

It's not just with THD. You can always use higher impedance rated inputs of cabs. Just the other way is dangerous.
