  • Versatile, high gain amp?

At the moment my main amp is a 6505+ into a 1960A. I love the tone, but I'm getting more and more pissed off with having to use a boost on the front end (SD-1). I know a lot of you will say that a 6505 doesn't need pushing, but I can't play it without the Boss. So, my problem is switching from dirty to clean without tap dancing. Also, I lose any ability with my setup to boost any lead.

So...today I tried out an ENGL Invader 150...first amp I've ever tried that appeared to have enough (smooth) gain without the need for a boost.

I'm thinking about selling my 6505 and my Cobra in favour of an amp that can do it all, but which amp is it? Any ideas? The ENGL is closest so far (it's the only one I've tried...lunch hour).

I'm considering Diezel Herbert/VH4, H&K TriAmp, ENGL SE 670, Invader 150, Mesa Roadking...any advice or other recommendations appreciated.

Ultimately, I want all my gain/saturation to come from the amp and I want a crystal clear clean. The only thing I want to plug into the front of my amp is my guitar.

I need the same thing and was pretty happy with my Engl Savage 120 but now I'm waiting on an Egnater Mod 50. You can get different modules for what you need. Each mod has 2 channels and the 50 watt amp takes 2 modules to give you 4 channels. I ordered it with their Fender twin/Deluxe module and the EG5 which is supposed to get you into the Soldano area. These are built to order so you have to wait (I'm waiting now) but for 1950 shipped it seems to me to be a greast deal compared to lots of mass produced amps out there for the same $$ right now. They'll also tweak the modules to suit your preference.

Go modular or go modeler! Personally, I think that the Peavey XXX is a very versatile amp due to the different voicings, but I get the impression that you want to go a different route. The Randall modular amps sound great to me, and the price is very reasonable.

What I want is a tube amp that sounds like it has a stomp box pushing it.

But, did you try the JSX?

Well my thoughts rhyme with fuck that

I haven't tried the Bogner, can't find a stockist or the money. The JSX is very good, but not quite there without a stomp. The Invader 150 is the closest I've heard so far, plus it has the midi functions...don't know what this means but it sounds like it makes it better, so I should get some.

I had a Vetta Mk1, just doesn't have the presence of a tube amp.

My Framus isn't quite there without a stomp either, but with one it's my perfect tone. I just want to press one pedal to go from clean to dirty. Anyone else brave enough to confess that their high gain, high end amp makes their fingers hurt unless there's a stomp running?

I think horns means the pooperschull, it has so much gain it will make you sh!t your pants.

But serious, I have never played the engl or a framus, but i have had the 5150's and i never needed a boost in front . It sounds like you are going for total saturation and compression, whicn in that case the Bogner Uberschall might be your amp.

Stay away from the Mesa's, because they will not give you what you are looking for, they actualy excel with a booster and sound best that way.

Another option you might want to look at his getting a Midi Switcher unit that will change the channel and also turn the pedal off and on when needed.

And Honestly, find yourself a used 5150 cab, the sound the best with the peavey amps.

ENGL SE (Probably the Invader too but, I haven't played one yet)
                        Mesa Road King
                        Egnater MOD 100/Randall RM100

Can't go wrong with either of these. All world class!

                            So is vaginas..if your gay.

But I'm not..so gain is alot like poon for me.

I'm with Siggy..if Saturation is what you desire..pooperschull all the way!!!:ROTF:

Yeah, nobody stocks 'em here. I heard various clips and located one on Ebay. Luckily, that was only a 2 1/2 hour drive..so I got to play it before spending the 2k. That was in 2002, and we're still happily married. Hell, that's CHEAP live-in poon for over 5 years. We're still on our honeymoon, I don't need viagra..it does what I like! That's some good head!!!

The cheaper alternative for "Raw" chunky tone with enough gain is the 6505/5150 halfstack with BBE"422" in the loop..it really wakes 'em up...even the clean channel.

I never required a boost to make either rig sound cool. I truly believe in less is more (except tight gain). If anything, I use a wah in front and that's it..

I saw Gus G of Firewind was using the Randall RM100 and sounded great. My bud saw him at Prog Power using the 6505 backline and said he sounded great also..so.

                            Happy huntin'.

When I saw gus last decemeber he was using kranks still sounded good, granted thats the only krank i've heard that sounded good but I guess gus be a lucky git who soudns fantastic through a gorilla amp if he needs to...

Try a vox vavletronix with the SD-1 and fiddle with the attenuator on the back to push the valve AD50 and up, this wills till sound warm like a valve amp but be quieter and will give you that versatillity...

Vavle kings can do a decent clean, and a pretty decent slightly overdriven crunch lots of popele don't like them but i've gotten plentyof godo tone's out of them without too mcuh fiddling.....

That way you should be able to keep at least one of those kick ass heads...

From your monkier I guess your in the RAF?
