  • Ever wonder why some pickups are preferred

    Ever wonder why some pickups are preferred by different guitar brands/boards?

    Around here, the Duncan Custom seems to be king.
    On the Hamer Fanclub it's Rio Grande pickups and some more "boutique" brands.

    Ibanez boards it's ???
    Gibson boards ???
    PRS boards ???
    Fender ???

    what are the standard answers on those guys?

    I am thinking for fenders it's "that certain lady that winds in the mojo for fender.

    For Gibson, it's burstbuckers? vintage T-tops, original PAF, what?

    Ibanez - is it the flying fingers or colored dimarzios?

    Any others?

      Gibson, the Timbucker is king. Closest to the PAF, but there are many winders there, a flavor of the month atmosphere.

      For everyday stock pickups, BB's are good, but you really don't have one exclusive winner.

        On Ultimate Guitar boards a lot of people love Bareknuckles for everything, never mind most of them have more in those pickups then the amp and guitar combined. Other wise dreamland rebel pretty much hit the nail on the head.

          Standard section to put this thread in would be the TECH SECTION!!

          I like Duncans and Dimarzios. EMG's?? Meh...

            Over at the Ibanez board it's mostly the Dimarzio Tone Zone/Air Norton combo. I haven't posted there in a while though.

              ESP=Seymour Duncan's and EMG's
              Ibanez=All different kinds of Dimarzio's
              Jackson=Seymour Duncans more than EMG's
              Gibson=Burstbuckers, 57' classics, Duncan Seth Lover PAF's. Very few EMG's although more of their guitars are being equipped with them stock.

                I think the same reasoning might be applied to other gear than pickups, as well... for example, I can´t remember when I heard someone talking about the BBE Sonic Maximizers somewhere else than here on the JCF.

                  The ADAdepot is huge on sonic maximizers, then again, jc fans are typically ADA MP1 fans, so I guess they are birds of a feather!

                    it depends on the guitar but I usually have no problem finding a suitable pickup from either DiMarzio or Duncan..depending on the body wood I might have ot go through a few before I find a good match thta I like.

                      Could it be because Duncans are standard equipment in Jacksons, and similarly Dimarzios in Ibanez's, and people have brand loyalty to those guitars?

                        On the John Petrucci forum it's:

                        Air Norton
                        D-Sonic

                          I think Maxboost hits the nail right on the head.
                          over on the seven string forum, the Ibby guys love their dimarzios and
                          everyone else seem to like duncans or EMG 707's.
                          BareKnuckle pickups have recently been the "big thing" for
                          replacing stock Carvin pickups in the Carvin 7's
                          (I did with mine and they sound great but not $150.00 a piece great)
                          BKs are great sounding pickups but the Exchange rate kills us here in the USA.
                          Lundgrens are big over on that forum as well.
                          If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

                            When I used to frequent the Zakk Wylde forum it was always EMGs and Les Pauls, but quite a few people over there started using the Bareknuckle pickups.
