  • Looking for a high gain amp.

I'm looking for an amp that would sound great with my Duncan active blackouts. Has the in your face distortion with plenty of crunch as well as not sounding thin, sounds stereo like a BBE built in, tight bass, decent mids for riffing and high's for soloing. I tend to favor the scooped sound..but the mids still have to be there. I like the modern metal sound and not so much of the old school sounding stuff. I don't care much for cleans as this will be used as a metal amp. I also don't use much effects as I want to be able to plug my guitar straight into the amp to get the best tone. Here are the amps that I may look into.

    Randall V2 with matching cab

Marshall Kerry King sig with Marshall 1960B cab

    Krank Revolution with matching cab

Engl Fireball with either matching cab or Marshall 1960B cab

    VHT Deliverance with matching cab

Mesa Dual Rectifier with matching cab.

I did own a Peavey 5150 II..but I'm looking for a different sound than that.

Soldano's and Framus's are a bit out of my price range..I'd like to keep the amp head under 2 grand.

    Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Those are all great amps. Try out as many as you can to see what you prefer. Also try the EVH III. I've heard really good things about it.

Powerball might be a better choice than a Fireball

I agree with the Powerball being better than the Fireball, but its a little bit out of my price range. How about Laney amps?

I haven't heard alot of good reviews of the KK marshall

(though the british guy (after kerry) makes it sound OK: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CKUEaDk0juU )

A friend recommended that amp to me, although I'm familiar with the JCM800's but man, that is totally not the amp for me.

5150 with a marshall or matching cab is the poor mans modern metal amp.

framus and engl and bogner are the higher end version.
                  some will use recto's aswell.

I love the sound of the Diezel Herbert, but I don't have over 4 grand to spend on it!

Krank Rev. gets my vote. That thing is scooped more than Baskin Robbins ice cream.

I think you've got it a little backwards - I'd by pickups to go with my amp, not the other way around... Just a thought. Pickups are MUCH cheaper.

I know what you mean, but if I love the sound and tone coming from the pickups, wouldn't it give me a clue of what kind of amp I'd like?

Thats a good list. I would check those amps out.
The Mesa Dual Rectifier would be a great choice btw..

oh dude, if you already have a 5150, why don't you spend the dough on a VooDoo mod from Trace. http://www.voodooamps.com/standardmods-peavey.html
