the old V-series (V4, V2, VT-22, etc) were tube, if that's what you're thinking of.
I have a SS150 and it was a nice amp with some nice thick distortion. Bought the 1/2 stack for $300 back in 1991/2? Strange that it cuts out after a while probably a cold solder joint. I should open it up as I don't want to throw money into it since I haven't used it in years.

What was the Lee Jackson Ampeg model that Paul Gilbert played? I thought that was all tube and it also had a VH name designation...

Just not the Century C270 II head though...

I bought one via mail order before trying it out, thinking it was the same distortion as the RG80's from that era expecting a Pantera tone but I was mistaken. It was loud though. Had a nice Jethro Tull kind of overdrive though, but that was not the direction I was going for back then.

EDIT: I forgot the model #, but it was actually a Century C-170 II. Had go go back to my review of it on Harmony Central.

+1 on the RocPro1000 head. Put it with a Carvin VE212 cabinet and you're all set.

They're a lot different than the solid-state amps.Chips and transistors. That's the difference as you have mentioned

Well, to get further into the technical, the chips are actually a bunch of transistors on the same substrate. And correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most of these have output stages made of discrete transistors anyway? The other possibility being high power op-amps, which are solid-state as well.

Any form of non-tube circuitry is solid state.

So what does that make tube amps - liquid state? Gas? Plasma?

Indeed. Tube amps have been known to induce a kind of metaphysical state of bliss in me, maybe that's it

as far as new amps i'd say Crate, Carvin, and Fender. they each have an SS amp for hard rock / metal. and they all sound pretty damn good

                              Crate Flexwave

                              Fender Metal Head

                              Carvin SX series
