HELP ME!!!!! ok heres what happened. i have a 60 watt peavey xxx 1-12 combo. it has a switch for either 6l6's or el34's. i had 6l6's in there and got some el34's to try cause i wanted to see whitch i liked better. i put the el34's in and there is this little bias knob thing i dont know what that does. i dont know if i might have bumped it if that would do anything?? but anyway i put the switch to el34's and put em in and played played on it for like 30 mins or so and it seamed fine and i liked how it was sounding. then just now i turn it on and start playing and it makes this big POP sound and all sound goes out. if i turn it up all the way i can hear it. what did i do??? i put the 6l6's back in and it still doin the same thing. did i blow a transformer or sumthin? help me out please!! thank you for any help! joe s.

Check all your cords. Try pulling the tubes and reinstalling them. Sounds like maybe a bad solder joint on a power tube socket. If it was a transformer you would usually smell or see smoke. Transformers smell aweful when they blow. When you pulled the original tubes you probably dislodged a bad solder joint that was always there.

A bad solder joint would cause you to blow up a tube because of a voltage arc. I would remove all the tubes and take the amp apart and chek for a bad solder joint on the socke with the cooked tube. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING... STOP!!!! THERE IS ALOT OF DANGEROUS VOLTAGE INSIDE THAT AMP EVEN WITH IT UNPLUGGED WITH THE TUBES OUT. CAPACITORS ARE LIKE LITTLE BATTERIES. THEY HOLD A CHARGE AND ARE JUST WAITING TO ZAP YOU GOOD.

Although it appears to be physically related to a power tube change....
Being you can hear it somewhat on one channel and not the other would make me initially look to a preamp tube. Power tubes issue would likely do it all the time.
I spose a failing power tube could have damaged supporting circuitry like a grid circuit or something. But that would probably show all the time too.
Check out the preamp tubes. Move them around between sockets and see if the issue changes.
