I have the same amp and I too had it retubed with EL34's. World of difference IMO. Mine starts sounding sweet after the Volume passes about 6 1/2. It's got plenty of gain for me too. I run it with a TS9 in the front and the Preamp gain between 11-12 on channel B. It also responds very nicely to an EQ in the loop.
