Line 6 Spider II and IIIs and Roland Micro Cubes seem to be the pick of the litter in all JCF practice/bedroom amp threads!!

Ya can't go wrong with either..

I picked one up at GC for $99.00 before Xmas for my daughter to use with her mini strat Santa brought. It sounds really good for it's size and runs on 6 aa battery's or the included ac adapter. The really nice part is that with battery power it can be moved around without having to keep unplugging it. I did try a 15w spider3 and found the sounds from the cube to be much better IMO.
I bought a 15w Spider III also and the Micro Cube I use at home for just playing around works incredibly well. Also, running effects, pod xt etc into the cube sounds incredible too!

Roland Cube 30. Its even good enough to jam with a drummer with providing the drummer isn't too loud.

Go with a Line 6 Spider amp. I bought my son one, a series II spider with 75 watts of power. Works pretty good for practicing at home, so much so, I want one for my office! I don't think it'll hold up in the mix of a band, but a good, loud amp for starters.

I agree...Roland cubes have a confusing knob layout...go with the Vox or the Line 6.

                I don't see what's confusing about this:

The Global website of Roland Corporation, a leading manufacturer and distributor of electronic musical instruments, including keyboards and synthesizers, guitar products, electronic percussion, digital recording equipment, amplifiers, audio processors, and multimedia products.

It's like 6 knobs, they're labeled clearly, and it sounds good. If you prefer Line 6 or Vox, great, but we're talking about a starter amp. Knob layout shouldn't be at the top of the reasons not to buy an amp...Especially when it's not even an issue.

Good recommendations with the spider and roland. I've played both and think they would suit a starter well. The line 6 might be more versatile for someone who is not too experienced with other pedals and effects processors.

The VOX DA5 is cheap, sounds great, and optionally runs on batteries

Hellz yeah I was going to say that as well. Greatest practice amp evah! Beware though, the G-DEC's do seem to have quality control issues. Do NOT buy a used one, get the warranty (you'll need it).

+7 Micro Cube. You can tote it around with the shoulder strap.
