  • Sonic Maximizers - What Amps Benefit?

Hey, I know many of you have said that a BBE Sonic Maximizer wakes a Peavey 5150 right up. What other amps pair really well with these?

not a dual rectifier in my experience

Just about any Crate SS amp.
They come to life with a BBE in the loop.

Yup, Not a Mesa Rec. Definately, a 5150.
        Damn, I love this Interweb.

I'm using a Crate Power Block right now, and I find it really works wonders. I've also tried it in a Marshall combo (can't remember which one), and it was also great. I was under the impression that these work on envelope distortion found with the speaker, not the amp, which should make it "work" with any amp....?

            Well

Well..they do "physically" work with any amp...but they don't give the desired result for every amp. With my Engl, it gave me more upper mid cut and crispness..but also too much harshness. And the bottom did get "bigger" but also looser. So for my amp...it didn't work...

What about Single Recs, like the Solo 50?

Nope..sounds like ass with both of my Sodanos, and Recto, MRK III, and horrible in the Ubershall..they don't gel with most "boutique" amps..from my and my freinds' experience.

I've tried BBE's in everything I've owned..they sound great with 5150's, XXX, Crates BVs/ss Crates, Randall rg 80-120's, and do well with Marshall 2210's and Marshall rack systems...most "rack" gear do well to be honest.

The BBE 422 is mandatory with 5150's.. that's my conviction. It REALLY wakes 'em up..more than any amp I've tried!!

I prefer the discontinued 422 because newer units have too much "sizzle" . The 422's are so much more "musical" sounding..and you can score one off Ebay cheaper than buying a new one. I heard good things about the sonic stomp pedal. But, I actually run my Marshall rack in stereo..which sounds really nice.

They work pretty nice in ENGL Fireballs.

Thanks, Bill. I'm considering a Single Rec Solo 50, so that answers a big question for me.

I think some have tried and liked the use of a bbe with a genz benz el diablo...

But the most known BBE amp combo is the 5150...

                          ADA MP-1 preamps.

Vito Bratta tried to get ADA to manufacture a preamp that already had the BBE installed in it, he felt it was that important to his sound.

In my limited experience with the BBE pedal... it did NOT seem to do anything to a DSL -100 full stack (marshall) But i felt it greatly improved
my DSL-50 half stack. (marshall 2000 series) It makes a VHT harsher..
i dont use it! Dont want to color perfection!~
