Peavey JSX

I'm thinking of circuit boards that are connected by stiff metal conductors, folded on top of each other, such that replacing many components requires a tech to unfold the entire thing risking even more damage. I had a friend that had a Peavey with some noise issues. Turns out he needed to recap the thing (possibly because of cheap components). He ended up passing that amp down the food chain, because the time/labor it required was insane.

Surely Peavey continues to improve their products, but cutting corners keeps costs down in general.

I'm somewhat surprised you tested all those high end amps and didn't find a keeper among the bunch ...unless you are just test driving them for the sake of comparison.
The Suhr, Custom Audio (CAE OD100) would be one I would likely find difficulty in parting with. I would probably really dig the Bogner Shiva and Splawn's too.

If you ever get a chance to test a Guytron GT100, or the Trace Voodoo I'd like to see a post.

Ok, I swapped the preamp tubes and put in 6L6's. It is dramatically better than with the stock tubes. It's still going back. It really is pretty good amp but it doesn't hold a candle to the CAA OD100 I had or the Splawn.

I found a sweet deal on a nearly new SLO - that will be here Tuesday.

Parting with the CAA OD100 was tough and I probably would have hung on to it if I had bought the Standard+ or SE+ instead of the SE/SH. I had a great email conversation with John Suhr and the Standard+ was his suggestion as well.

As for the Shiva, it's a very nice amp. It's not quite what I'm looking for. It'd be a great dinosaur rock amp. The clean channel is very good (not OD100 good, but still very nice). The overdrive channel is very good - great for classic rock, blues, and maybe some old Sabbath/Priest/Maiden stuff.

Just to elaborate a bit on the JSX today. I was actually quite pleased when I first plugged in my PRS SC245. It really sounded thick. Great sustain on the Ultra channel. Then I switched to the clean channel. It was noticeably darker which is fine because that's easier to dial out than shrill. I got the clean passable - it felt a little compressed even at lower volumes which seemed odd to me. The Crunch channel was just OK - it was tricky to dial in the good stuff on that channel. Then I switched to my JCF-01. It was fine. Then I plugged in a Suhr Strat. Suprisingly the Ultra channel actually sounded really good with the same settings. The Crunch channel was really brittle at first- I managed to dial in a passable tone but those settings sounded bad with the SC245. The Clean channel with the Strat was just as dull and lifeless as it could be - no tweaking salvaged that.

All in all, it's a good versatile amp for the money but there are a lot of better amps out there.

There is one on ebay for about $2500..pretty good considering how pricey these things are new.

If you're trying out amps and want to have something that sounds good with a few differing axes..you might consider looking into a THD flexi 50 too.

check out the framous cobra with matching cab. or the Marshall Vintage Modern with matching cab. they'rrrrrrrrrre GREAT!
