Germanium fuzz/distortion pedals

Hey guys. Wondering if anyone here can explain the difference in sound between a germanium fuzz/distortion pedal and others....I've heard that the germanium pedals (i.e. the old Big Muff a la David Gilmour) sound way better, but I can't find a description of the sound. Any thoughts?

They sound different not better. I think the 1n4001 diodes sound better haha.. All my pedals have been modded with either 1n4001s or LEDS in the clipping circuit. The germaniums do sound better than the 1n4148s IMHO though. The LEDs sound bigger and thicker. The germaniums are smoother. A good mod is to use 2 germaniums in series.
