5150 Combo blew a fuse and now won't work correctly.

Hmmmm, I'm starting to see more and more of these strange 5150 issues. Still can't figure mine out......here's the thread that tell of mine's f'd up story.

As it is right now, I still have the 5150 and will hang on to it until I find someone who can actually fix the damn thing.

If anybody figures out a fix for these, please let me know ASAP. The Spider does the job, but only because my soundguy kicks ass. I miss my tone.

Same. I've seen a couple on Ultimate Guitar. Really odd. Do these have built in time bombs or something?

I fix 5150's in my sleep! If you can't find a tech near you give me a shout. I work on more of them than anyone else except for Peavey.

Wow. Are you "the" Jerry from FJA mods? Big fan of your website man! Nice work you have done on the 5150's. I used to own a 5150 head and wanted to get one of those snake-skin type tolex's on mine. But my wife disapproved it and eventually I ended up selling my 5150.

Say, you used to have a cool picture showing what the extra tube in the 5150II/6505+ was for. Why did you remove it?

BTW Jerry... why is it that Peavey hasn't come up with a rack-mount version of the 5150/6505? Or at least a 5150 preamp? I bet it would sell like hot cakes.

Well the shop I lugged the thing to said that they don't really re-tube them. And he seemed pretty disturbed that I did it myself without having it re-biased. Am I correct in thinking that as it's a fixed bias amp that I shouldn't need a re-bias? The Kit I ordered from Eurotubes didn't mention a re-bias, just that the matched 6L6's would get the bias in the right area.

Anywho, the guy there said it sounds like a power tube issue. I've thrown in a pair of electro harmonix 6L6GC's just to trouble shoot with and still got the same problem.

I'm gonna try a full set of ECC35's along with the new EH's just to double trouble shoot and if things are the same then the guy at the shop with give me some names of specialist places to take it to.

yes, 5150 is a fixed bias amp. the other way to adjust the bias would be to mount a pot onto the circuit board and do it. My 5150 had a cold-solder problem and one fine day it had just stopped working.

If that shop isn't capable of retubing an amp, I can't imagine that they'd be capable of doing much of anything. Scratch them off your list or repair shops stat or you'll be sorry! I bet cleaning pots is too much for them too! They probably don't know you have to pull the chassis to get at the slots in the pots!

Yeah, I was pretty dumbfounded when they said they'll generally diagnose the problem but wont fix it. To be honest I just think they didn't want to touch the amp. I don't actually use them much any more. Used to have a really good relationship with the old manager who'd put a discount on everything I bought from them. He ordered me up my KV2 and only charged me cost price for it as I'd known them a while.

New tubes on order. Will update when they arrive

Just thought I'd update you guys on the amp.

Picked it up last week from the shop that was repairing it. It took them about a month to diagnose the problem. Very time consuming the engineer said.

In the end the fault was traced to 2 FETS that had blown. The guy was real busy when I picked it up so I didn't get time to talk shop about what the FETS do. But I seem to recall something about them controlling the channel switching of the amp?

All seems to check out though. Not had chance to really push it to gig volumes and shake it down but fingers crossed it'll hold up when it gets gigged nest Tuesday.
