Master volume vs. channel volume?

I play through a Marshall JCM600 that has individual channel volumes for clean and dirty and a master volume. I've gone back and forth on these and what I've found is that I have to set the clean channel volume to where it can be used without too much breakup. Then I balance the other channel with it and use whatever master volume setting I can get away with.
