  • Low wattage tube amp for cleans?

    Hi all -
I want to pick up a small tube amp for my apartment as i grow weary of my vox ad15. I need it for cleans; i'll use a pedal for any of the heavier stuff.
So i'm looking at the following in terms of new/available amps:
    Epiphone Valve Special
    Peavey Royal 8
On the used market, looking at
    Epiphone Electar 10 / Galaxie 10
    Peavey Classic 20
Which of these do you recommend?
    Thanks in advance,
    jeff

Hard to beat the Classic 20, IMO.

      Yes, a good choice.
Also have heard good things about the Roland Cubes, but I haven't played one of them yet.
I'm freakishly partial to Fender Princetons, or Deluxe Reverbs. But, that's me.
They take pedals very well (they are easy to overdrive without sounding buzzy) and the clean of a Fender is the best there is.

          Or a blackface.

          Or a silver/drip edged blackface.

Fender Pro Jr. 15 watts. A good Princeton Reverb will cost big $.

That's a lot of choices for a low wattage amp.
Interesting. I can understand the EL34, but the rest?

I'm kind of partial to the 6V6. Warm, at low volume.
                  And sings, at higher gain.

A 20-watt tube amp is still too loud for an apartment. I would try the Epi Valve Jr or the Blackheart

Has anyone tried the Crate V8 - 5 watt w/ 1x10 speaker? I've been thinking of getting a low-watt clean amp also, and these are a good deal this month at GC.

Any tube amp is too loud for an apartment, unless you have understanding neighbors. However, for a small tube amp recommendation, I'll say the Crate Palomino. Takes pedals well, and sounds okay at lower volumes.

The THD Univalve is 15 watts and will accept any one of those power tubes as well as a lot more.

I think the Windsor Studio amp list for $499 so you can probably get it for $350 + tax new.
