I actually like my old slightly modded 50w JCM900 over the Soldano SLO. Its the perfect 80's metal tone.

Yeah..John gigged with his for years and sounded cool. The 900s still had that "singing" lead tone...all it takes it a decent player with for an ear for good tone. That's a huge part of it.

so can you play anything from schenker to thrash metal with an late 60s marshall going straight in? or even with a tubescreamer or similar in front as a boost?

well, with the 2210, you can....going straight in.

you have to understand, Endo only plays large festival type venues. So he can totally wind that 60s Marshall out to find its sweet spot. When you're trying to project over the heads of 100,000 people so that even the poor ugly people at the other end of the field can hear you (all the hottest chicks are down front watching him play or backstage limbering up), you need the raw grunt of a vintage non-master head. Plus they naturally contain more mojo.

Although I thought he was playing some old 80s 300W Mesa head these days.....

My RM100 is in the shop right now. I had a few other amps to pull out while I wait but I pulled out my Marshall JMP and decided to go old school. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised, I guess it had been awhile. I do miss the effects loop amp being able to switch channels but the Marshall sounds great.
                Just one more guitar!

Is there a Marshall combo that has "the sound" or do you have to get a half-stack?

George Lynch in particular has been through just about every amp in the book though. I tried his Randall Lynch Box and i really didn't dig it. For me i went through Marshalls in the 90's and I'm a fully fledged Mesa Boogie guy. I wouldn't give up my Boogie for ANY Marshall. But I'm talking Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ and Mark III's. Those are what Boogie is all about. I don't like the Rectos at all.

And for me, with a Mark III on Greenbacks or H30's, it's closest i have come to the Lynch tone. Of course a solid maple body guitar helps as well.

I got my latest Mark III for $700 from Guitar Center and it just kills.

I agree with that, I will never give up my Mk III Coliseum 300 for any other amp but old Plexi super leads are the shizznit

Marshall makes a good basic amp, but I'd prefer to have some channels and not have to throw a stompbox in front. Right now I am very satified with my El Diablo 60. I've gone from JCM900 2100 to Road King to AD50VT to here and I have no desire to get anything else.

i'll be getting some KT77 for it soon...curious how it will sound with these.
the v1 preamp tube stays where it is, though. a few years back i already switched some preamp tubes back and forth trying to find a better combination, but none of the modern tubes sounds as good as that one. i have NO clue whatever it is (it's unlabeled and seems to be rather old) but it's just magic right there.
my word of advice...if you plan on going back to the EVH, don't play the marshall too often...chances are the EVH will sound lifeless and bland after you got used to that 2210 singing tone.
All my JCM 800 50 watt needs is a good overdrive pedal and I use a THD Hotplate attenuated just two notches (-8) with the Deep switch on and it sounds incredable!!
I actually don't care if it doen't have an FX loop or channel switching or whatever!
Mine was modded for EL34's and I'm wanting to try a set of those KT77's myself.
I know what you mean about V1, the current manufactured 12AX7's just don't make the amp sound as good as an old GE, Phillips, RCA, Mullard, etc.

Life is a circle so they say I have some killer amps around la casa but whenever I go to the trusty old JCM 800 2203 with 6550's after not playing it for a while... its like an old comfy pair of shoes, better when you slam the front with an SD-1. I've had the thing since 84 or 85...like a long lost friend eveytime...think I'm about ready to repalce the caps in it tho.

I bought many custom Marshall like amps looking for the perfect Marshall tone. Only Marshall is Marshall. I still sometimes try the new flavor of the month and do love the Elmwoods, I would still rather keep the Marshall. It's like going back to JD after trying every single malt and not knowing what you were looking for in the first place.

I love my 1981 2203 with 6550s thru two 1960b cabinets, I run the keeley metalzone up front and it just kills. I've tried all sorts of amps but always wind up with marshall. I am building my first clone...an 18watt marshall with merc mags. I hope it sounds like a marshall or its out on its ass!
