Amp advice please....

Get a set of powered computer speakers — a 2.1 setup with the woofer — and plug them into any "headphone" amp. Korg Pandora, POD, Yamaha MagicStomp, whatever. Way more versatility, and a way more full sound at a lower volume, than any standard practice amp on the market.

No point of having a tube amp in your apartment to try do metal...
However there are those 1/4watt amps that could probably do it...

I practice with a 5watt with the volume at less than 8 o clock and its more than enough..even that needs to be at 2-3oclock to hit the sweet spot.

Good luck in your search...maybe try a ENGL Tube Toner or whatever they are called..or something similar to that...

listen, far be it for me to be the kind of person to say "never", but let me be honest; I dont believe you're going to get the tone you want from a tube amp over 1/2 a watt at bedroom / apartment levels, it just ain't gonna happen.

And keep in mind that a lot more goes into your tone than just the amp and whether its tube or solid state. Only you can really know what tone YOU are looking for, and no amount of description is gonna make us hear it the way you do, ya dig?

Do what I did and take advantage of the guitar center return policy. Get a GC credit card and take home an amp for a week, then return it and get another, and another, and another, until you find the one you want. I went through 13 amps across the spectrum before I found "the one", and who knows if it'll still be "the one" 5 years from now or less.

Plug any tube amp into a Koch Loadbox. It's sort of like a THD Hotplate or a Marshall Power Brake, with a ton more features.

You're talking about using $1500 worth of professional equipment to achieve what a $249 modeling amp can do at bedroom levels. Not that there's anything wrong with that..... Just sayin'

You can try a Marshall Valvestate; the VS65R is a good one, as is the VS100R. Very underrated amps IMO, and cheap as hell on the bay. They'll get you pretty damn close to what you've described without a pedal.

Actually, I paid about $850 for the bunch. Modelling amps are good, but they dont come near a gt-8's versatility IMO.
