I wrote to Lee in the late '90's about my (well, actually straycat's) amp. Lee really wanted me to ship the amp to him and pay him about $200 to put in a tube-buffered effects loop. He claimed the VL-series were supposed to have the tube loop but SLM cut it late in the design stages to keep costs down.
While I didn't do it, I was pleasantly surprised to see him still providing some level of support for the VL's. I also knew that he was offering some DVD's regarding servicing the amps but I didn't know that there were clips on youtube, so thanks for posting those, Bill.
+1 I had one of these as well as the Lee Jackson version. FIGHT used these to record and basically just covered the cabs with a blanket and went straight in with no effects at all. They used them live too. Do yourself a favor and make sure that you have the excess tolex trimmed up on the inside. Bill is one of many that caught fire due to extra tolex burning on the tubes. Congrats!
Oh, My room smelled liked burt amp for years..I liked it!

glad you dig it. i didn't like the power attenuator too much, so i left it off.
turn the gain back to right where it starts to redline (or purpleline) and hit it with an od pedal in front
yeah me too. I never used anything with mine other than a rack fx in the loop for delay..and a wah in front sometimes. They're pretty quiet amps..I never used a noise gate with 'em either..just remembered that.

I'l try that GF I use a fulltone OCD on my Carvin on the clean channel.
I'm going to hook my rack to it sometime and see how the Intellifex works with the Ampeg.

Oh, that should be no prob at all..those are good units. Mine didn't seem to have any probs with any processors I put in there.
The 5 way midrange control really changes the voice of the amps. A friend used to get an authentic "Cliffs of Dover" lead tone..

The Carvin X100B didn't like the intellifex too much but was hoping the Ampeg does, so thats good to know Bill.
The mid range select is pretty cool really you can dial in the best tone depending on which guitar you are using.
I would like to be able to find a download to get a manual for the VL.
I did get instruction book with it. I remember reading about the key, I never used that feature. I can't remember what it looked like or what I did with them. I have manuals for everything else, even my first 5150.

The Key turns the power off so nobody can turn the amp on and use it if I remember correctly.
That would have been great to have back about 13 years ago as I was in a band in a shared warehouse situation and I always was skeptical about leaving my amp/cabs in there when one day out of the blue I came there to modify my rack (that I never left there) and the other band was playing and low and behold were running through my cabs. I was pissed. And after that I started taking my cabinets after every rehearsal.
