But yeah, I don't normally set my 5150 with everything at noon. And I do run an eq in the loop as well. I tend to boost my mids a little as the BBE can make it seem a little scooped. Perhaps I should do another video with something closer to the tone I usually have...."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"

5150 set as follows with a Tubescreamer in front of it will kill anything!
Lead Channel
Pregain: 4
Bass: 6-7
Mid: 2-3 (seems low I know, but it's a 5150, thing has more mids set to zero than most amps do set to 11)
Treble: 3-4
Resonance: 5-6
Presence: 5-6
That amp takes overdrives like a champ. I set my Sparkle Drive with the Drive at 9 o'clock, Tone at Noon and Level at about 1 o'clock, Clean knob is at zero to get the original 808 circuit sound...

a 5150 with a tubescreamer or boss sd-1 kills most anything for METAL as far as i am concerned. it's also very versatile in the metal realm. with higher mids and treble on the lead channel you can approximate a marshall style sound, with lower mids, more presence and bass, on the crunch channel you're almost into boosted rectifier territory.
i set up my amp very similar except for the lead gain which i keep slightly lower and the treble/presence which i keep a tad higher, but that's depending on the cab anyway.
don't forget the crunch channel, it's the key to this amp imho. it doesn't sound very good without a boost, but boosted it's much thicker and more low-mid heavy than the lead channel which has more sizzle and cut. think machine head (crunch) or arch enemy (lead channel) to get an idea.
i love this amp
i just with they made a 3 channel amp like the framus cobra with all the gimmicks like two master volumes three independent channels etc but with the 5150 sound for the two gain channels...that would kick ass

"Hmm, maybe I should fiddle around with my 5150 and Boss DS-1....."
SD-1, not DS-1, mind you. the sd-1 is an overdrive whereas the ds-1 is a distortion box, therefore it will most likely sound...well, not so good
when using an overdrive with a high gain amp you want to crank the level all the way and keep the pedal gain down to 0 or 1 depending on the stompbox. use the tone to fine tune your high end.
basically, you're not adding any gain, but instead tighten up the low end making it sound...well, tighter andy sneap for example is known for having done this on pretty much any record he's worked on.

Yeah, that's the main reason why I've not put it in with the 5150 yet. I usually run it with my modded Valve Jr.

I did the whole Dual Recto/5150 shootout thing in '92. I also had an original TS-9, 808, DS-1 and SD-1 and ect that I used with various old Marshalls. But I'll be damned if I'd use 'em with good high gain amp KNOWN for their brutality, crunch, organic depth and warmth...no way, never, never, never!!!
Maybe I should slam my Uber with a fuzzbox...NOT!
..but that's me!"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"

Y'know brother DumbyWumps, you're not the only one I heard this from. Alot of the "pros" do exactly that..too many to list. Besides, You and Fragle know what you're doing..
Maybe, I should try this with the Uber..I have a friend that mods stomps. I'll have him bring over a bag o' stomps to try. Maybe me likey!!"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"

Hahaha... I don't know how it will work with the Uber, if it's already super tight then using an overdrive might make it sound thin. I know my Blackmore doesn't take overdrives very well, it's tight as a nun as is!
Boosting works great with the 5150 though, and apparently with Rectos as well so I'm interested to try that out once I get home!

Gotcha man! That's true. There is absolutely no "flub" with the Uber. Zero flub even with the Bass and Gain kicked all the way up..I actually recored like that. Its nice to hear that your Engl is the same way..
It's prefer to have it all amp whenever possible . I found that stomp compress the range of your tone. Making it VERY solo/wank friendly...kinda like my JMP-1. Nothing beats the organic dynamics of a great tube amp. It may be a little harder to play or get used to but when you do..its awesome.
Well you have both.so you know this."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
