  • EVH 5150 lll...second one dead...

I got my EVH head back on Friday, brand new as Fender had completely fucked up my other one. Waited nearly two months for this to be resolved. In this time I was loaned a Marshall which was like going back to the dark ages; excellent amp if I wanted to sound like fucking Angel Witch or Spider; then I borrowed back my old 6505+, still an amazing amp, but the EVH pisses all over it...when it's working...

The replacement, brand new head died after two hours of playing this afternoon. Same problem as before, all the footswitch lights are on, but nobody's home.

I'm fed up with traipsing to and from Manchester with this head, so you'd think by now I'd have learned a valuable lesson and decided on another head? When this thing works, it is the best sound I've ever heard, nothing comes close...when it works.

In a vid with Eddie he talks about how he tested the 5150III to make sure it is built good. He said he turns the amp up all the way, leans the guitar against the cab, leaves it there for a month and then comes back to see if it still works. It seemed pretty stupid

I'm sorry this post is not helping you.

Sean..that sucks. My bud at Guitar center..John C (Beyond Fear)..said both EVH IIIs came back for repairs..One if the came back twice...he just rolled his eyes.

If worse comes to worse..can you get a refund. Where did you buy it..Did you try the JVM. He said he sold quite a few and none of them came back and he wants to buy one himself and he uses nothing but 6505s..

If the JVM is dependable that would be great because it sounds like a killer Marshall!

      just thinkin..

I bought it from Sounds great in Manchester, who are an excellent shop BTW. I did try the JVM, not my cup of tea really. The EVH is the only amp that matches the sound/tone I've had in my head for years, I just want one that works. I've never had trouble with any equipment that I've owned; Framus, Peavey, Mesa, Marshall, Vetta, Gallien Krueger etc etc.

This is the first Fender product I've owned (not counting my 2005 SD re-issue) and it's the most unreliable piece of shit I've ever had the misfortune of owning...I used to own a Ford Escort that was almost as bad, but at least the pedals still worked.

I want the EVH 5150 lll sound, I'm (stupidly) reliant on it.

keep at it. you'll gte a good one. If it is the sound you have in your head, you need to keep at it until you get a good one. my 2 cents.

Fingers crossed for third time lucky. Soundsgreat always has a nice assortment of shiny things. Most of the staff are ok as well, it's just a pity you can drop £2k on a guitar one Saturday and then pop in two weeks later the guy who sold it to you doesn't even recognize you. Ho hum...

Well Sean ..ummm shit. You know what you like. I can uderstand that. Go for three..I tried that amp and it has its own voice like any other good amp. It can't be replicated really..so there's really no other choice. You went through alot of really nice gear to discover what you like and get where you are.

This is what I always heard about newer Marshalls..well, you heard same. That's why I was put off by the JVM. But I was able to quickly dial in something cool with it. Same with the EVH III and JSX..thery're very easy to dial. 5150/6505..have tempermental G spots..just like Rectos..Harder to fine tune...IMO!

Crossing fingers for III EVH III..!!!

              Good Luck..report back!

Ive posted this before...only 1 out of 3 EVH's III's that my brother in law
and i have, has NOT broken! But...they were fixed within a week..and
the local private amp guru..(not affiliated with Fender) said "These are
well made, with quality components"... just a weird coencedence i guess?
(1 head just had a bad tube...the other a bad switch or something, that
puzzled the guy, as he said it was one of the better quality switches!
Go for a triple fix... think of it this way...your getting all the bad luck
out at the beginning... this means your amp should be trouble free for
                15 years now!

That sounds promising..hopefully that will be the case!!

I gotta say..they look cool. They catch your eye amoung a sea of other amps..so, that's good.

Playing with the knobs..it doesn't "feel" cheap..

I auditioned one last summer and liked it alot for what it does. I wouldn't call it a brutal amp but it does a classic metal sound very well and has an amazing amount of clean headroom on the first channel...kind of like a Twin on steroids. Best of luck getting this worked out. At least you've found your sound...some people spend a lifetime trying to achieve that goal.

I am crossing my fingers that I got a good one. My only complaint is the effects loop is a bit noisy. Best of luck with your amp situation.

The shop rang me today and gave me three options:

                        1) Return the new EVH and wait a couple of weeks for another new one to replace it (shipping from Holland to UK).

                        2) Shop will try and locate an ex demo EVH from another dealer in the UK...it'll take as long as it takes.

                        3) Swap the chassis's between new knackered head and my original repaired head. My original head was repaired but the outer casing was damaged in transit.

I'm thinking it has to be option 3, mainly because Fender said they repaired the footswitch problem. I'm still hesitant because Fender haven't so far let me know what the original problem was; if I knew what it was, I'd feel a little more confident.

                        What do you think?

I think you're on the right track...I'd go with option #3 along with an explanation of what the fix was as well as an affirmation that it will still be under warranty.

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.
