  • "Quick" gt-8 patch story...

Something amazing happened over the weekend. most of you know that I love my GT-8 and have commented about it a LOT. So, over the weekend, in the middle of a typical jam session, the drummer gets a call and he had to leave immediately. So, I and the other guitarist are just playing on our songs and after a while, we are done. So, he asks "dude, do you want me to set you up with a nice tone for yourself real quick?". He adds this "real quick" after everything. "do you want to go over the song we learnt last week real quick"? At this point, I'm thinking to myself "getting a great sound from the gt-8 is anything but real quick" Plus, he's never owned a gt-8 before. his rig consists of a Rocktron Prophesy II, a Compressor, 32 band equalizer and finally a Carvin TS100. But he does use two 4x12's. A Crate and a Jackson cab. the crate is for the high end and the jackson he says gives him a great low-end. His tone is very nice. Solid state tight yet with the tubey feel.

Anyway, he picks up the gt-8 and goes crazy on the knobs just using his ears for guidance. But within 10 mins, he's got me a great fat tone. It cuts through his sound and everything. It actually complements his tone and vice versa. Next week when the drummer's back, will be the real test. but, I'm confident it will hold good. I had plugged in my jackson SL2HT into the Boss and the out was going into the back of a crate powerblock. That's it. The speaker cab was a stock crate closed back which I got for $50 and put in 4 guitar warehouse Lead 80 speakers.

    Lessons learnt:
    * the gt-8 sounds amazing at LOUD volumes. I had even turned off the Harmonic Converger. The HC was making the sound very bright.
    * to carve your tone, play the freaking thing loud. After I got back home and plugged into my 1x12, the tone was still excellent. but the other way around, never did so good.
    * get out the mental blocks...dont think "hmm, I love the rectifier sounds of xyz band...I think I will use the rectifier models on the gt-8" doesnt work that way.
    * for extra tubey feel, use the carvin ts100.

Anyway, thanks for reading. If anyone's interested in the patch, just let me know and I'll post it here.

Agreed that the GT8 sounds better the louder you play it. At lower volumes, you miss a lot of the dynamics that a lot of tube amp devotees say you can never get out of modelling units. But they really do come out well at band volumes. I guess, if I were a "tube amp snob", that's a way of saying they sound more "life-like" at louder volumes.

The Boss GT units are all great, though - whether you use the amp modelling or not. I do both - some patches are just for effects to go with my amps distortion & cleans, and some are modelled amps run through my clean channel. Best of both worlds, IMHO.

P.S.- Try running it in stereo sometime. Even more awesome stuff.

Word to the wise: everything sounds better louder. That goes for mixing and mastering where a high amplitude can fool you, as well. In crafting guitar tone, however, I agree with EB: it's more effective to do so at gigging volume and it usually translates to lower levels.

well, I have only one stereo cab. the aforementioned crate cab. I am running the gt-8 into the crate in stereo, but out the crate, its mono into the cab. I tried to send out the crate in stereo, but damn unshielded speaker cable resulted in a LOT of feedback and I had to go mono with my trusted Monster shielded speaker cable. Also, I reckoned I will not hear much difference with one cab. Like my guitarist friend, I should get another cab and go true stereo.

But I think the major reason why I got a good sound was because I turned the speaker sims off. If I turned them on, I started getting sort of a muffled tone which like you said sounded like crap at loud volumes. And the default is cam sims on. Someday I'll take my camcorder to the jam session and post a clip on youtube.

oh, BTW, yesterday was the fist time I took my Yellow Bengal SL2HT for a Jam and when they saw the guitar, their jaws literally dropped. They had never seen anything so beautiful. I was a proud Jackson owner then.

Im too anal, to even look into my great patches too closely!
Reasons? One, just scrolling thru the "Effects Chain", can sometimes
make you switch one slightly...and bam! Your great patch is different.
Anyone else notice, that sometimes your po'ed about your GT-8 not
being that great sounding, only to reach behind it where your guitar
plugs in, and slightly increase the small knob "Output" setting, and your
tone explodes? Ive got a killer patch, that has Zakk Bottom in it..
(pitch transposer, 2 octaves lower) but only about 15% of it at the end of the "Tweak".
With a bit of smokey sounding Quiet Riot, with that collosium echo
added in, to make the guitar sound likes its bouncing off the far back wall
400 feet away. But day to day...one little preamp tweak, or a slight
nudge with the main "patch level" output in the top front of the unit..
and your killer tone changes! I need to super glue the knobs in place!

*** Oh, and running the GT-8 in true Stereo? KILLER !!!!
I have my cabs about 7 feet apart..(which isnt that much stereo field)
but when you set your ass right in the middle of this... Orgasmic!
(note to self... dont buy any of Robert's guitars...they may be sticky! LOL
