I am thinking about picking up a Zoom H4 multitrack. Anyone us one of these? What are your thoughts good, bad, etc. Are there better options out there for the money (or less for that matter)?
I've heard a friend's band do jamming recordings using an H4. Very impressive, especially since it incorporates 4 (IIRC) discrete and directional mics so you can actually pan stuff left and right and get an actual decent mix if you set the amps up right.
I decided I am going to give on a shot. I am picking up some PC recording stuff first, but will get an H4 in another check or two. I need to pace myself
i just see it as better for recording a band in a room. especially setting it up on it end with the little stand, makes a lot more sence than laying the H4 down to me. i've used the H4 and it is a great digital recorder. i just feel the design of the H2 better suites a band. check out the specs for both online.
from the zoom website
W-XY mic patterns with 4 mic capsules and signal processing allows Front 90° cardioid, Rear 120° cardioid and 360° polar patterns
the H4 only has 2 mics and and is a fixed 90 degree XY pattern. granted you can plug more mics into it and use it as a 4 track. but i personally would get more use out of the H2.
